Congo Ebola virus discoverer warns world of more deadly anonymous epidemic

Many families in the DRC face a race against time to tackle deadly viruses that appear from time to time, and medical advances are unable to find effective vaccines to reduce their impact. When the desired vaccine is found, another more dangerous and deadly virus emerges.
“We are now in a world where new pathogens will emerge, and this poses a real threat to humanity” Professor Jean-Jacques Moymbe Tamfum, who helped discover Ebola in 1976 and has been at the forefront of the team of new pathogen researchers ever since, told CNN.
He added that he took “the first blood samples from the victims of a mysterious disease that caused bleeding and killed about 88% of the patients and 80% of the staff who were working at The Yambuco Mishin Hospital in Kinshasa when the disease was first discovered”.
Fears of a new deadly virus remained very real even as the patient recovered from Ebola-like symptoms. Her samples were tested on site and sent to the Congo National Institute for Biomedical Research in Kinshasa, where they were also tested for other diseases with similar symptoms. They all came back negative, and the disease that afflicted her remains a mystery.
“We should all be afraid, Ebola was not known,” said Dr. Dadin Boncol, who works at the Ingenda Ebola Control Center in Kinshasa. “Covid-19 was also unknown, we should be afraid of new diseases, It’s not a science fiction movie. It is a scientific fear based on scientific facts.”
“Humanity is facing an unknown number of new and deadly viruses originating from tropical rainforests in Africa,” Dr. Boncol added.
The West should rely on African scientists in Congo and elsewhere to act as guardians to warn of future diseases, he said.
British scientists warned on Monday that the new strain of the rapidly spreading coronavirus in Britain carries mutations that could mean that children are at risk of contracting the strain like adults, unlike previous strains of the virus.
Scientists from the Government’s New and Emerging Viral Threat Advisory Group, which tracks the new strain, told reporters that the dominant strain has spread rapidly in southern Britain and could also spread rapidly across the country.

وقال يجب على الغرب الاعتماد على العلماء الأفارقة في الكونغو وأماكن أخرى ليكونوا بمثابة الحراس للتحذير من الأمراض المستقبلية.
يذكر أن العلماء البريطانيين حذروا أمس الاثنين من أن السلالة الجديدة من فيروس كورونا التي تنتشر بسرعة في بريطانيا تحمل طفرات قد تعني أن الأطفال معرضون للإصابة بهذه السلالة مثل الكبار، خلافا للسلالات السابقة للفيروس.
وقال علماء من المجموعة الاستشارية للتهديدات الفيروسية الجديدة والناشئة للجهاز التنفسي الحكومية، التي تتابع السلالة الجديدة، في إيجاز للصحفيين إن السلالة السائدة انتشرت سريعا في جنوب بريطانيا وإنها قد تنتشر سريعا أيضا في أرجاء البلاد.
