British scientists have revealed an experiment in which people who have previously been infected with COVID-19 are exposed to coronavirus again to examine immune responses and see if people will get infected again.

In February 2021, Britain became the first country in the world to give the green light to the so-called “challenge experiments” on humans, in which volunteers are deliberately exposed to Covid-19 to promote research into the disease caused by coronavirus.

However, the study, which began Monday, is different from the one announced in February, seeking to re-infect people who have previously contracted Covid-19, in an effort to deepen understanding of immunity rather than infecting people for the first time. According to Reuters.

Helen McShane, a vaccine specialist at Oxford University and senior researcher on the study, said: “The information we get from this work will allow us to develop better vaccines and treatments, as well as to understand whether people will become protected after coronavirus infection, and for how long”.

McShane added that the work will help understand what immune responses protect to prevent the disease from re-developing.

In February, a British study found that all new Covid-19 recovered still have high levels of antibodies for at least six months that are likely to protect them from infection again.

Scientists who conducted the study, which measures previous levels of covid-19 infection among residents across Britain, said a quick second infection would be rare.

The results showed that among participants who had previously tested positive for Covid-19, 99% retained antibodies for three months. After a full six months of follow-up during the study, antibodies remained in 88% of them.
