Qatar Museums announces a new archaeological discovery in Al-Aseela

Doha: The Antiquities Department of Qatar Museums announced yesterday that it has discovered archaeological remains in the Al-Aseela Cemetery, one of the oldest historical sites in Qatar, which is located 12 kilometers east of Umm Bab.
Qatar Museums said in a statement that the initial excavation was in one of the tombs, which dates between the years 300 BC and 300 AD. Although the tombs were stolen in ancient times, the Antiquities Department team was able to discover the remains of important personalities buried in large tombs carefully built at the top of a hill, and buried with them some of their private possessions such as a sword, some metal tools and gold earrings.
The skeleton of a camel and its baby was also found buried as an offering in a stone room connected to a human cemetery.
The human remains will undergo advanced anthropological and molecular analysis, including the study of ancient genetic material. This process aims to understand the migration patterns and dietary habits of people who lived in this area in ancient times.
“The recent discovery in Al-Aseela paves the way for a deeper understanding of ancient civilizations, which will enable Qatar Museums to trace the impact of those civilizations in shaping Qatar’s heritage. We are honored to be able to undertake this important archaeological work to support the preservation of Qatar’s history and its traditions. ” Qatar Museums CEO Ahmed Musa Al-Namlah said.
Commenting on this discovery, Mr. Faisal Al-Nuaimi, Director of the Antiquities Department at Qatar Museums, said, “Excavation work is one of our main tasks in the Antiquities Department at Qatar Museums. The Qatari lands are full of archaeological sites that bear many evidences indicating human settlement in the depth of the history of this region, especially cemeteries”.
“Our work at the Al-Aseela site comes within the framework of a systematic plan that has been going on for years to uncover thousands of cemeteries in various parts of Qatar with the aim of forming a general perception of the nature of the lives of the inhabitants who settled in this area in ancient times.
The monuments that we discovered after undergoing accurate and sophisticated analysis will contribute to the goal that is consistent with our larger purpose, which is to preserve, discover and document Qatari heritage, and link it to our present in which we live”.
Comprehensive data showed that the Al-Aseela site still contains archaeological evidence that has not yet been discovered.
The found tombs revealed that an untouched camel was buried in a natural resting position with its legs bent under its body. This indicates that the camel was taken to the burial pit, and the one who led it blessed it, and then it was slaughtered with its baby.
This amazing discovery will provide new information about camel breeding and its uses, as well as about the rituals followed in the pre-Islamic Arabian Peninsula.
A similar cemetery was discovered in Al Mazrooah in 1961 and contained remains of a hybrid camel from Al-Jindal and Al-Katar.
The Aseela Cemetery is one of the many burial sites that Qatar Museums seeks to explore under the National Priorities Program for Scientific Research, “Human Population and Demographics in Qatar from the Neolithic Age to the Late Iron Age” led by Sidra Medicine, and the funding of the Qatar National Research Fund.

الدوحة: أعلنت إدارة الآثار في متاحف قطر، اليوم، عن اكتشاف بقايا أثرية في مدافن العسيلة، أحد أقدم المواقع التاريخية في قطر، والذي يقع على بعد 12 كيلومترا شرق مدينة /أم باب/.
وذكرت متاحف قطر في بيان أن التنقيب المبدئي كان في إحدى المقابر، التي يرجع تاريخها إلى الفترة ما بين العامين 300 قبل الميلاد و300 ميلادي. وبالرغم من سرقة المقابر في العصور القديمة، إلا أن فريق إدارة الآثار تمكن من اكتشاف بقايا لشخصيات هامة دفنت في مقابر واسعة بنيت بعناية في قمة تل، ودفنت معهم بعض من مقتنياتهم الخاصة مثل سيف وبعض الأدوات المعدنية وأقراط ذهبية.
وتم العثور أيضا على هيكل عظمي لناقة وصغيرها مدفونين كقربان في غرفة حجرية متصلة بإحدى المقابر البشرية. وسوف تخضع البقايا البشرية لتحليلات أنثروبولوجية وجزيئية متقدمة، بما في ذلك دراسة المواد الوراثية القديمة. وتهدف تلك العملية إلى فهم أنماط الهجرة، والعادات الغذائية للأشخاص الذين عاشوا في هذه المنطقة في العصور الغابرة.
وقال السيد أحمد موسى النملة الرئيس التنفيذي لمتاحف قطر “يمهد الاكتشاف الأخير في العسيلة الطريق لفهم أعمق للحضارات القديمة، مما سيمكن متاحف قطر من تتبع أثر تلك الحضارات في تشكيل تراث قطر. يشرفنا أن نكون قادرين على القيام بهذا العمل الأثري المهم لدعم الحفاظ على تاريخ قطر وتقاليدها”.
وتعليقا على هذا الكشف، قال السيد فيصل النعيمي مدير إدارة الآثار في متاحف قطر “تعد أعمال التنقيب من مهامنا الأساسية في إدارة الآثار بمتاحف قطر، فالأراضي القطرية زاخرة بالمواقع الأثرية التي تحمل شواهد كثيرة تدل على الاستيطان البشري الضارب في عمق التاريخ لهذه المنطقة، لاسيما المقابر”.
وأضاف “يأتي عملنا في موقع العسيلة في إطار خطة منهجية مستمرة منذ سنوات للكشف عن آلاف المدافن في مختلف أنحاء قطر بهدف تكوين تصور عام عن طبيعة حياة السكان الذين استوطنوا هذه المنطقة في العصور القديمة. وستسهم الآثار التي اكتشفناها بعد خضوعها لتحليلات دقيقة ومتطورة في تحقيق هذا الهدف الذي ينسجم مع غايتنا الكبرى وهي الحفاظ على التراث القطري واكتشافه وتوثيقه، وربطه بحاضرنا الذي نعيشه”.
وأظهرت بيانات شاملة أن موقع العسيلة لا يزال يحمل شواهد أثرية لم يتم اكتشافها بعد. وكشفت المقابر التي تم العثور عليها عن دفن ناقة لم تمس في وضع الراحة الطبيعية مع ثني أرجلها تحت جسمها. وهذا يشير إلى أن الناقة قد اقتيدت إلى حفرة الدفن، وأبركها من اقتادها، ثم ذبحت مع صغيرها.
وسيقدم هذا الاكتشاف المذهل معلومات جديدة حول تربية الإبل واستخداماتها، وأيضا حول الطقوس المتبعة في شبه الجزيرة العربية قبل الإسلام. كما تم الكشف عن مقبرة مشابهة في المزروعة في عام 1961 واحتوت على بقايا جمل هجين من الجندال والكتار.
وتعد مقابر العسيلة أحد مواقع الدفن العديدة التي تسعى متاحف قطر لاستكشافها في إطار برنامج الأولويات الوطنية للبحث العلمي “السكان البشريون والديموغرافيات في قطر من العصر الحجري الحديث إلى العصر الحديدي المتأخر” بقيادة سدرة للطب، وتمويل الصندوق القطري لرعاية البحث العلمي.
