New study: Common asthma drug changes the rules of the game against Covid

Doha: A recent British study has shown that the anti-asthma drug Budesonide can also benefit people with the new Coronavirus in avoiding dangerous disease pathways, making a German medical expert consider the study’s findings to be a “game changer.”

According to a recent study published by the German radio website, asthma treating Budesonide can reduce the risk of acute Covid-19 infection caused by the new Coronavirus by about 90 percent, and Budesonide can also shorten the duration of the disease by one day.

The findings, published last week in the Medical Journal of the Lancet, were produced by a team of researchers led by Sanjay Ramakrishnan of Oxford University.

The research team examined 146 participants, all from the United Kingdom, who suffered for a few days of mild symptoms of Covid 19.

Half of the participants received the usual treatment after coronavirus, which includes paracetamol or aspirin, while the other half inhaled Budesonide (800 micrograms) twice a day until symptoms disappeared.

It took an average of seven days, while the study lasted from July 16 to December 9, 2020, the German website Welt reported.

The result was as follows: in the group that did not take Budesonide, 10 participants were forced to go to the emergency department or hospital treatment because of severe symptoms due to the development of their coronavirus.

In the group that inhaled Budesonide, only one participant was forced to receive treatment in hospital.

This led researchers to find that Budesonide reduces the risk of hospitalization due to the new Coronavirus by 91 percent.

“The study found evidence that a relatively cheap and widely available drug with very few side effects helps people at greater risk of worse Coronavirus outcomes recover faster,” researcher Chris Butler, a South Wales GP and professor of primary care at Oxford University, was quoted as saying by the Guardian website.

Karl Lauterbach, an epidemiologist, commented on the results very positively. Lauterbach said the study was a “game changer”.

“I know some doctors who are already following this strategy,” Lauterbach wrote in a tweet, referring to the prescribing of Budesonide by some doctors to their patients. “As a general practitioner and on the basis of available data, I can also follow this without any impediments,” the Social Democrat politician said.

وتلقى نصف المشاركين العلاج المعتاد بعد الإصابة بفيروس كورونا، والذي يشمل تناول عقاري الباراسيتامول أو الأسبرين، فيما استنشق النصف الآخر دواء “بوديزونيد” (800 ميكروغرام) مرتين في اليوم حتى اختفت الأعراض.

وقد استغرق الأمر سبعة أيام في المتوسط، بينما استمرت الدراسة من 16 يوليو إلى 9 ديسمبر2020، حسبما أورد موقع “فيلت” الألماني.

وجاءت النتيجة على النحو التالي: في المجموعة التي لم تأخذ دواء “بوديزونيد”، اضطر عشرة مشاركين للذهاب إلى قسم الطوارئ أو العلاج في المستشفى بسبب ظهور أعراض حادة لديهم جراء تطور مسار إصابتهم بفيروس كورونا.

أما في المجموعة التي استنشقت دواء “بوديزونيد”، اضطر مشارك واحد فقط لتلقي العلاج في المستشفى.

الأمر الذي جعل الباحثون يتوصلون إلى أن دواء “بوديزونيد” يقلل من خطر دخول المستشفى جراء الإصابة بفيروس كورونا المستجد بنسبة 91 في المائة.

ونقل موقع صحيفة “الغارديان” البريطانية عن الباحث كريس باتلر، وهو طبيب عام من جنوب ويلز وأستاذ الرعاية الأولية في جامعة أكسفورد، قوله “إن الدراسة وجدت دليلاً على أن دواء رخيصاً نسبياً ومتاحاً على نطاق واسع مع آثار جانبية قليلة جداً يساعد الأشخاص المعرضين لخطر أكبر من نتائج أسوأ جراء فيروس كورونا على التعافي بشكل أسرع”.

وعلق كارل لوترباخ، الطبيب أخصائي علم الأوبئة على النتائج بشكل إيجابي للغاية. واعتبر لاوترباخ أن الدراسة بمثابة “تغيير لقواعد اللعبة”.

وكتب لاوترباخ في تغريدة على تويتر: “أعرف بعض الأطباء الذين يتبعون بالفعل هذه الاستراتيجية” في إشارة إلى وصف دواء “بوديزونيد” من طرف بعض الأطباء لمرضاهم. وتابع السياسي الاشتراكي الديمقراطي “بصفتي طبيبا عاما وعلى أساس البيانات المتاحة، يمكنني اتباع ذلك أيضا دون أي موانع.”
