QRCS and QFFD support health sector in Hodeida

«الهلال القطري» يدعم القطاع الصحي في محافظة الحديدة باليمن

Under the emergency response to the humanitarian crisis in Hodeida, western Yemen, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has recently implemented a series of activities to support the governorate’s medical sector.

With $700,000 funding from Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), three primary health care centers and two rural hospitals are operated and supplied with medicines, consumables, and medical staff.

Working 24/7 to offer integrated health care services, the health facilities took care of 11,950 injuries and epidemic-affected patients till the end of October 2018.

At the same time, a number of training courses was held to qualify community volunteers to deal with various types of injuries and emergencies. The 50 volunteers from five districts of Hodeida also received first-aid kits.

In a statement, Ali bin Hassan Al-Hammadi, Secretary-General of QRCS, said this response was part of the ongoing aid provided by QFFD and QRCS over four consecutive years, to “alleviate the suffering of our Yemeni brothers amid war, siege, epidemics, alarmingly deteriorated living conditions, and high mortality rates”.

“The State of Qatar, represented by QFFD, continues to extend invaluable help to the victims of war in Yemen, inspired by a humanitarian and moral commitment to supporting distressed nations and putting an end to their pain. This reflects QRCS’s core mission of saving lives and preserving dignity,” he added.

Hodeida, a governorate along the western coast of Yemen, has witnessed a mass displacement wave due to the severe situation that is getting worse day to day. Many villages now are either destroyed or no-man’s land.

Lasting since mid-June 2018, this crisis poses a risk of humanitarian disaster for 2.5 lives with no food or medication in the governorate.

Last month, Fatima (9) underwent a surgery in her right arm, and the doctor told her father to bring her every two days for follow-up. But the poor father could not afford the transportation fees from their remote neighborhood to the hospital in Hajjah Governorate.

The good news was that the district’s health center was reopened, thanks to QRCS’s intervention. The girl was immediately admitted to the health facility, where she received treatment free-of-charge throughout her post-surgery recovery.

The now happy father sent millions of thanks to the center’s management and to QRCS for securing such vital aid.

Mohamed Abdullah, who lives in Hodeida, valued QRCS’s initiative to treat students of Hafsa School for Girls, who felt terribly ill during class time. QRCS’s ambulance was called and the girls were given first aid and rushed to the Al-Zaidiya Hospital for medical treatment.

وبحسب تقارير عمل المشروع، فإنه يتم حالياً تشغيل 3 مراكز للرعاية الصحية الأولية ومستشفيين ريفيين، وتزويدهم بكل احتياجاتهم من الأدوية والمستلزمات الإسعافية والطواقم الطبية، بتكلفة إجمالية تقدر بحوالي 700.000 دولار، من أجل تقديم خدمات صحية متكاملة ومستمرة على مدار 24 ساعة يومياً، حيث تم حتى نهاية شهر أكتوبر الماضي علاج حوالي 11.950 حالة من مصابي الأحداث الجارية وضحايا الجوع والأوبئة. وأوضح سعادة السيد علي بن حسن الحمادي -الأمين العام للهلال الأحمر القطري- أن هذه الاستجابة تأتي ضمن المساعدات المستمرة التي قدمها الهلال الأحمر القطري بدعم من صندوق قطر للتنمية على مدار 4 أعوام متصلة.;
