Qatar Charity brings succor to drought-hit project in Kenya

Qatar Charity (QC) has completed an emergency relief project for drought-affected people in Kenya’s eastern province of Turkana, where QC distributed essential food items for 20,000 people in a number of drought-affected villages.

The project was funded by Qatari philanthropists and implemented by Qatar Charity office in Nairobi as part of QC continuous efforts to help the Kenyan people, especially in areas affected by natural disasters such as floods and droughts.

Qatar’s ambassador to Kenya Jabor bin Ali al-Dosari, who participated in the distribution of food to the affected people, praised Qatar Charity for its humanitarian efforts in Kenya and encouraged the implementation of more relief and development projects in these poor areas.

After visiting the only hospital in the region, which lacks basic services, ambassador al-Dosari underlined the importance carrying health projects for the benefit of the people of the region, stressing the need to support the people with everything necessary to withstand the harsh weather conditions.

For his part MP Lokiru Ali Mohamed thanked donors in Qatar for completing the project as part of their efforts to help the Kenyan people.

According to UN reports, East Africa, particularly Kenya and Somalia, is experiencing a severe drought that threatens the lives of millions of people due to delayed seasonal rains, the sharp decline in local food production and the difficulty of delivering humanitarian aid.

The drought conditions, which are expected to continue until the end of this year, have led to the transformation of about 3.4mn people into food insecurity.

Qatar Charity carries out various projects in various areas in Kenya, including drilling wells and relief projects, as well as construction projects such as schools, mosques and health centers, in addition to its efforts in the field of social welfare, where more than 4,000 orphans are fostered.

انتهت جمعية “قطر الخيرية” من تنفيذ مشروع إغاثي عاجل للمتضررين من الجفاف في مقاطعة تركانا الشرقية بكينيا، قدمت من خلاله طرودا غذائية تتضمن المواد التموينية الأساسية لصالح عشرين ألف شخص في عدد من القرى التي تسبب الجفاف بحدوث وفيات فيها، وبخاصة بين الأطفال بسبب سوء التغذية، ونفوق أعداد كبيرة من المواشي، مهددة حياة الرعاة الرحل.

وجاء إنجاز المشروع بتمويل من محسني دولة قطر وبتنفيذ من مكتب” قطر الخيرية” في العاصمة نيروبي وذلك ضمن جهوده المتواصلة لمساعدة الشعب الكيني وخاصة في المناطق المنكوبة بالكوارث الطبيعية كالفيضانات والجفاف، وتضمنت الطرود الغذائية مواد تموينية يكفي كل منها الأسرة شهرا كاملا، وتشتمل على دقيق الذرة، والفاصوليا، والأرز، وزيت الطعام.

وقد أشاد سعادة السيد جبر بن علي الدوسري سفير دولة قطر في كينيا، الذي قام بمشاركة فريق” قطر الخيرية” في توزيع المواد الغذائية على المتضررين، بالجهود الإنسانية التي تقوم بها في كينيا، وشجع على تنفيذ المزيد من المشاريع الإغاثية والتنموية في هذه المناطق الفقيرة .

وأكد السفير الدوسري، بعد زيارته للمستشفى الوحيد في هذه المنطقة والذي يفتقر إلى الخدمات الأساسية ، أهمية المشاريع الصحية لصالح سكان المنطقة، مشددا على ضرورة دعم الأهالي بكل ما يلزم للصمود في ظل الظروف المناخية القاسية.

من جانبه، شكر السيد محمد علي لولكري النائب البرلماني الكيني المتبرعين بدولة قطر على إنجاز المشروع ضمن جهودهم المقدرة لمساعدة الشعب الكيني.

ووفقا لتقارير للأمم المتحدة، فإن منطقة شرق أفريقيا ، وبالذات كينيا والصومال، تشهد حالة جفاف حاد يهدد حياة ملايين البشر بسبب تأخر هطول الأمطار الموسمية والانخفاض الحاد في الإنتاج الغذائي المحلي وتوقف المعونات الإنسانية لأسباب مختلفة، وقد أدت ظروف الجفاف التي من المتوقع أن تستمر حتى نهاية العام الحالي إلى تحويل حوالي 3.4 مليون شخص إلى حالة انعدام الأمن الغذائي بشكل كبير.

يذكر أن” قطر الخيرية” تنفذ مشاريع متنوعة في مناطق متعددة في كينيا من ضمنها حفر الآبار والمشاريع الإغاثية، بالإضافة إلى مشاريع إنشائية كالمدارس والمساجد والمراكز الصحية، إضافة إلى جهودها في مجال الرعاية الاجتماعية حيث تكفل أكثر من أربعة آلاف يتيم.
