‘Pangolin’ among possible sources of Coronavirus spread: WHO

Geneva: In their final report on possible causes of the coronavirus (Covid-19) emergence in China, WHO researchers announced their inclusion of the Pangolin in a list of other animals that may be a possible cause of the virus, a list that includes bats and cats.

Researchers who have turned to China to find the source of the virus wrote in the report that they revealed some of its contents that other animals such as mink, cats and bats may be behind the emergence of Covid-19, and they didn’t rule out the hypothesis that corona was already spreading in other countries before it was discovered in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

They also noted that the final report of their Covid-19 virus research and survey was to be submitted to representatives of the 194 WHO member states in Geneva, before being published on the Internet.

The Pangolin is a small scaly mammal found in parts of Africa and Asia and is described as an “ant eater” or “sloth” because of its long tongue and its ability to reach the living places of swarms of ants wherever they are found.

The animal also plays a very important role in ecosystems by controlling the numbers of insects, which in turn contribute to the maintenance of soil ventilation and fertility, especially since it eats up to 70 million ants annually.

جنيف: أعلن باحثون من منظمة الصحة العالمية، في تقريرهم النهائي حول الأسباب المحتملة لظهور فيروس كورونا /كوفيد-19/ في الصين، عن إدراجهم لحيوان البنغول (آكل النمل الحرشفي) ضمن قائمة من الحيوانات الأخرى التي قد تكون سببا محتملا في ظهور الفيروس، تضم على سبيل المثال الخفافيش والقطط.

وكتب الباحثون الذين تحولوا إلى الصين للبحث عن مصدر الفيروس، في التقرير الذي كشفوا اليوم عن بعض مضامينه، أنه من المحتمل أن تكون حيوانات أخرى وراء ظهور /كوفيد-19/ مثل “المنك” والقطط والخفافيش، غير مستبعدين فرضية أن تكون كورونا منتشرة بالفعل في دول أخرى قبل اكتشافها بمدينة /ووهان/ الصينية في ديسمبر 2019.

كما لفتوا إلى أنه من المقرر تقديم التقرير النهائي لعمليات بحثهم واستقصائهم عن فيروس /كوفيد-19/ إلى ممثلي الدول الـ 194 الأعضاء في منظمة الصحة العالمية في جنيف، في وقت لاحق قبل نشره على شبكة الإنترنت للاطلاع عليه.

جدير بالذكر أن البنغول هو حيوان ثديي حرشفي صغير يوجد في أجزاء من إفريقيا وآسيا، ويوصف بـ “آكل النمل” أو “الكسلان” نظرا لطول لسانه وقدرته على الوصول إلى أماكن عيش أسراب النمل أينما وجدت.

ويؤدي هذا الحيوان أيضا دورا مهما للغاية في الأنظمة البيئية عن طريق التحكم في أعداد الحشرات التي تساهم بدورها في الحفاظ على تهوية التربة وخصوبتها، خاصة أنه يأكل سنويا عددا يصل إلى 70 مليون نملة.
