NASA Delays First Flight of Ingenuity Helicopter to Mars

Washington: US Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA ) announced the postponement of the first test flight of the helicopter (Ingenuity ) in the atmosphere of Mars, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday due to a possible technical problem that was detected during the test of the helicopter.
In a brief statement, NASA said that the command sequence for an April 9 test of the vehicles rotors, where they would spin up to full speed, ended early when a “watchdog” timer expired. That timer oversees the command sequence and prevents the test from proceeding if there is an issue.
NASA did not elaborate on the specific issue that aborted the test, beyond that it took place when the flight computer on the 1.8-kilogram helicopter was trying to go from “pre-flight” to “flight” mode.
Mission engineers will reschedule the test once they evaluate the telemetry from the vehicle.
That test was the last before a first flight of Ingenuity, which was scheduled for the evening of April 11. NASA said that flight attempt will now take place no earlier than April 14.
NASA said the helicopter is “safe and healthy” and fully communicating with mission controllers on Earth.
The agency’s helicopter team is reviewing data from the test to diagnose the issue. NASA will have to reattempt the full-speed spin before Ingenuity can fly.
Ingenuity traveled nearly 300 million miles to Mars tucked inside the belly of the Perseverance rover. It has successfully unfolded itself from its underbelly hideaway, dropped to the ground, survived frigid Martian nights on its own, charged up with solar energy, and conducted a series of system checks.
Its mission is to search for signs of past life on Mars, study its climate and collect samples that will be sent to Earth by 2030.

واشنطن: أعلنت إدارة الطيران والفضاء الأمريكية /ناسا/ ، عن تأجيل أول رحلة تجريبية لمروحية /إنجينيويتي/ في جو المريخ، كان من المقرر إجراؤها يوم أمس، وذلك بسبب مشكلة تقنية محتملة تم رصدها خلال اختبار المروحية.
و أوضحت /ناسا/ أنه كان من المرتقب أن يتم إطلاق المروحية في رحلتها الأولى ولكن بات الأمر معلقا حتى موعد لن يأتي قبل يوم 14 أبريل.
وأوقف فريق /ناسا/ تجاربه على المروحية، التي يبلغ وزنها نحو 1.8 كيلوغرام، الجمعة الماضي ، في وقت سبق الموعد المحدد بسبب تنبيه مرتبط بخلل محتمل.
و قالت /ناسا/ ” إن فريق المروحية يراجع القراءات المُرسلة لتشخيص وفهم المشكلة” …مضيفة “أن فريقها سيقوم بعد ذلك، بإعادة جدولة اختبار السرعة القصوى”.
وأكدت /ناسا/ أن المروحية آمنة وفي حالة جيدة وأنها تمكنت من إرسال معلومات إلى الأرض.
وبينما وصفت /ناسا/ عملية تحليق المروحية بأنها غير مسبوقة ومحفوفة بكثير من المخاطر، مؤكدة أنها قد تقود لجمع بيانات لا تقدر بثمن بشأن الظروف على المريخ.
وبتحليق المروحية، ستسجل /ناسا/ إتمام أول عملية طيران في الغلاف الجوي للمريخ بالتاريخ .. ووفقا ل/ناسا/، فإن رحلة مروحيتها ستمثل عرضا تقنيا لأول رحلة طيران تعمل بالطاقة على المريخ.
جدير بالذكر أن /إنجينيويتي/ وصلت إلى المريخ، يوم 18 فبراير2021 ، برفقة المسبار /بيرسيفيرانس/ حيث كانت مثبتة في بطنها.
ولفتت إدارة الطيران والفضاء الأمريكية إلى أن الرحلة الأولى للمروحية لن تتجاوز مدتها 20 إلى 30 ثانية، الأمر الذي سيعتبر إنجازا كبيرا ، وبعد ذلك، من المفترض أن يعمل العلماء على تحريك المروحية برحلات تجريبية إضافة لمسافات أبعد وارتفاعات أكبر، بشكل تدريجي.
وستكون مهمتها البحث عن علامات حياة سابقة على سطح المريخ، وستدرس مناخه، وستجمع عينات سيتم إرسالها إلى الأرض بحلول عام 2030.
