3 Tourists Arrested for Vandalizing the Great Wall of China

Beijing: Three tourists who vandalized China’s Great Wall, one of the country’s most popular historic landmarks, have been detained and fined, Chinese officials said. Two men and a woman were arrested on Sunday after they scrawled their names on the wall with a key, wire and other sharp objects, the administrators of the Badaling special tourism zone said in a statement.

Badaling, about 70 kilometers from Beijing, is the most popular section of the wall for tourists. The statement did not offer details on the amount they were fined or the length of their detention. Under China’s law for protecting cultural relics, the fine for carving or scrawling on a historic building is less than 200 yuan (S$31), but serious damage offenders can be detained for up to 10 days and fined 500 yuan.

Construction of the Great Wall began in the third century BC to stave off Mongol invasions, and it spans over 21,000 kilometers. The wall attracts around 10 million tourists per year, but the swell of visitors, combined with age and weathering, has left swathes of it in ruins. 

This isn’t the first time the relic has been damaged by misbehaving tourists. A visitor was caught on camera defacing the historic site with a key last March, on the first day the Great Wall opened up for tourists after being closed for two months during the peak of the pandemic, state-run Global Times reported.

The Beijing municipal government introduced a blacklist last April and threatened to name and shame tourists who damaged the wall.

Visitors who are blacklisted are also banned from revisiting the site, but it is unclear for how long.

وتشكل بادالينغ الواقعة على بعد حوالي 70 كيلومترًا من بكين، أكثر الأقسام شعبية في الجدار لدى السياح. ولم يقدم البيان تفاصيل عن مبلغ الغرامة أو مدة توقيف السياح الثلاثة. وبموجب القانون الصيني لحماية الآثار الثقافية، تبلغ غرامة النحت أو الخربشة على مبنى تاريخي أقل من 200 يوان (31 دولارًا) ، لكن في حال إلحاق أضرار جسيمة، يمكن توقيف المرتكبين لمدة تصل إلى 10 أيام مع غرامة قدرها 500 يوان. وبدأ بناء السور العظيم في القرن الثالث قبل الميلاد لدرء غزوات المغول وهو يمتد لأكثر من 21 ألف كيلومتر. ويجتذب السور نحو عشرة ملايين سائح سنويًا، لكن التدفق الكبير للزائرين إضافة إلى عوامل الزمن والعوامل الجوية، تركت مساحات شاسعة منه في حالة خراب. وليست هذه المرة الأولى التي يتضرر فيها المعلم الأثري بسبب سوء تصرف السياح. فقد ذكرت صحيفة «جلوبال تايمز» الحكومية أن كاميرات المراقبة وثقت قيام زائر بتشويه الموقع التاريخي بمفتاح، في اليوم الأول لإعادة فتح سور الصين العظيم أمام السياح بعد إغلاقه لمدة شهرين أثناء ذروة الوباء. ووضعت حكومة بلدية بكين قائمة سوداء وهددت بفضح السائحين الذين ألحقوا أضرارًا بالجدار.

ويُمنع الزوار المدرجون في القائمة السوداء من زيارة الموقع مرة أخرى، لكن مدة المنع غير معروفة.
