Masks’ Disposal Crisis: Protecting human health and destroying the environment

Doha: Masks, which was previously used only in medical fields, has become an integral part of our lives, especially after the spread of coronavirus, and despite the fact that many anti-Coronavirus vaccines have been produced, the pandemic is not over yet, and wearing masks is still recommended, along with handwashing and social distancing.

Wearing a face mask is an effective way to reduce the transmission of the virus and is a suitable way for all segments of society.

Although it is not a comprehensive treatment, studies show that the more people wear face masks in public places, the more we can slow down the spread of Covid-19.

The significant increase in the use of masks coincides with the expectation of a new environmental disaster due to the neglect of safe disposal methods after use.

Almost every minute about 3 million masks are being disposed of, with the production of single-use masks amounting to about 43 billion masks per month, approximately the rate of plastic bottles.

Governments around the world publish many awareness guidlines on how to properly dispose of masks, which in turn helps in recycling and not decompose masks into fine fibers and chemicals that severely damage the environment.

الدوحة: أصبحت الكمامة جزء لا يتجزأ من حياتنا خصوصاً عقب انتشار فيروس كورونا، تلك الكمامة التي كان يتم يقتصر استخدامها على المجالات الطبية سابقاً.

لم تنتهِ جائحة فيروس “كوفيد-19” بعد، وعلى الرغم من إنتاج العديد من اللقاحات المضادة له، فما زالت التوصيات بوضع الكمامة على الوجه مستمرة، إضافةً إلى إرشادات غسل اليدين والالتزام بالتباعد الاجتماعي.

ويعتبر وضع الكمامة على الوجه، هو وسيلة مناسبة لجميع فئات المجتمع وفعالة للحد من انتقال الفيروس. والدراسات تبيّن أنه كلما زاد عدد الأشخاص الذين يضعون الكمامة على الوجه في الأماكن العامة، كلما تمكنّا من إبطاء انتشار “كوفيد-19”.

ويتزامن التزايد الكبير لاستخدام الكمامة مع توقع حدوث كارثة بيئية جديدة بسبب إهمال الطرق الآمنة للتخلص منها بعد استخدامها، فكل دقيقة تقريباً يتم التخلص من نحو ٣ ملايين كمامة، ويبلغ الإنتاج للأقنعة ذات الاستخدام الواحد نحو ٤٣ مليار كمامة شهرياً أي ما يقارب معدل إنتاج العبوات البلاستيكية.

تنشر الحكومات حول العالم إرشادات توعوية كثيرة حول كيفية التخلص السليم من الكمامة، وهذا بدوره يساعد على إعادة تدويرها وعدم تحللها إلى الياف دقيقة ومواد كيمائية تلحق أضراراً بالغة بالبيئة.
