NASA: Large Asteroid to Pass by Earth on March 21st

Doha: NASA has revealed that the planet will be on schedule with an “important” and possibly dangerous astronomical event next Sunday.

According to NASA, an asteroid, that is predicted to pass by our planet, will be at its closest on March 21st, the largest in 2021, its closest approach will be at a distance of about 2 million kilometers from Earth without the risk of colliding, but this astronomical event will allow scientists to study the orb closely.

According to Sputnik, NASA has indicated that the asteroid is known as “2011 FO32”, has a diameter of less than one kilometer and will pass at 124,000 kilometers per hour, “faster than most asteroids” passing near Earth.

NASA assured that the “danger” of the asteroid colliding with the planet does not exist, as at its nearest point, it would remain more than five times the distance between Earth and the Moon.

“None of the known large asteroids will hit Earth in the next century, and it is unlikely that those which have not been discovered yet will do.” NASA said.

NASA continued, “The more information we gather about these orbs, the more we can prepare to exclude them in the event that one of them threatens Earth.” Nevertheless, it remains close enough to be classified as “potentially dangerous,” according to official groups.

الدوحة: كشفت وكالة الفضاء الأمريكية “ناسا”، أن كوكب الأرض سيكون على موعد مع حدث فلكي “مهم” يوم الأحد المقبل، من المحتمل أن يكون خطرا.

ووفقا لـ”ناسا”، فإنه من المتوقع أن يمر الأحد 21 مارس/آذار الجاري، كويكب سيكون الأكبر خلال عام 2021، على بعد نحو مليوني كيلومتر من الأرض دون خطر الاصطدام بها، لكن هذا الحدث الفلكي سيتيح للعلماء دراسة هذا الجرم السماوي من كثب.

وبحسب موقع “سبوتنيك” فقد أوضحت “ناسا” أن هذا الكويكب يعرف باسم “2011 FO32″، ويبلغ قطره أقل من كيلومتر، وسيمر بسرعة 124 ألف كيلومتر في الساعة، أي “أسرع من معظم الكويكبات” التي تمر بالقرب من الأرض.

وطمأنت الوكالة إلى أن “خطر اصطدام” الكويكب بكوكب الأرض غير قائم، إذ أنه عند أقرب نقطة له، سيبقى على مسافة تزيد عن 5 أضعاف المسافة بين الأرض والقمر. 

وأكدت أن “أيا من الكويكبات الكبيرة المعروفة لن يرتطم بالأرض في القرن المقبل، وكذلك من غير المرجح أن تفعل تلك التي لم تكتشف بعد”.

وتابعت: “كلما جمعنا مزيدا من المعلومات عن هذه الأجرام، أمكن الاستعداد لإبعادها في حال هدد أحدها الأرض” لكنه مع ذلك يبقى قريبا بدرجة تكفي لتصنيفه على أنه “يحتمل أن يكون خطرا”، وفقا للفئات الرسمية.
