New method of vaccination against Coronavirus

Doha: Stanford University and the University of North Carolina have devised a new method that could be a better alternative to traditional methods of vaccination, particularly for COVID-19 vaccines.

Scientists from both universities came up with a small 3D-printed patch containing the vaccine and is placed on human skin full of immune cells targeted by vaccination, al-Hurra reported.

The vaccine patch yielded dozens of times better results than the traditional vaccine method, which relies on injections inserted into the arm muscle, according to preliminary results, where these promising patches include 3D microscopic needles but are sufficient to enter the skin, and are therefore painless and do not require specialists to give them to people wishing to obtain the vaccine.

The results of the study showed that the vaccine patch generated a significant response to T cells and special antibodies, which were 50 times larger than regular injections.

Although micro-needle technology has been known for decades, researchers at both universities are seeking to overcome some of the previous challenges by adopting 3D printing that facilitates the use of micro needles and their use in the administration of various vaccines against influenza, measles, hepatitis or the emerging Coronavirus.

If successful and adopted, the new technology will significantly increase vaccination rates around the world, especially since some vaccines need rigorous storage and experts to give them, but these barriers will not exist with vaccine patches.

الدوحة: ابتكرت جامعة ستانفورد وجامعة نورث كارولينا الأمريكيتان، طريقة جديدة يمكن أن تكون بديلاً أفضل عن الطرق التقليدية للتطعيم، لاسيما فيما يتعلق باللقاحات المضادة لفيروس كورونا “كوفيد 19”.

وتوصل علماء من الجامعتين إلى ضمادة لاصقة صغيرة مصنوعة بتقنية الطباعة الثلاثية الأبعاد تحتوي على اللقاح توضع على جلد الإنسان المليء بالخلايا المناعية التي يستهدفها التطعيم، بحسب موقع الحرة.

وأعطت لصقة اللقاح نتائج أفضل بعشرات المرات من طريقة اللقاح التقليدية التي تعتمد على الحقن التي تغرز في عضلة الذراع، بحسب النتائج الأولية، حيث تضم تلك اللاصقات الواعدة إبراً مجهرية ثلاثية الأبعاد ولكنها كافية للولوج داخل البشرة، وهي بالتالي غير مؤلمة ولا تحتاج إلى مختصين لاعطائها للأشخاص الراغبين بالحصول على اللقاح.

وأوضحت نتائج الدراسة أن لاصقة اللقاح ولّدت استجابة كبيرة للخلايا التائية والأجسام المضادة الخاصة والتي كانت أكبر بـ50 مرة من الحقن العادية.

ورغم أن تقنية الإبر المجهرية معروفة منذ عقود، بيد أن الباحثين في الجامعتين يسعون إلى التغلب على بعض التحديات السابقة، من خلال اعتماد الطباعة الثلاثية الأبعاد التي تسهل استخدام الإبر المجهرية والاستفادة منها في إعطاء لقاحات مختلفة ضد الأنفلونزا والحصبة والتهاب الكبد أو فيروس كورونا المستجد.

وفي حال نجحت التقنية الجديدة وجرى اعتمادها، فإنها سوف تساهم في رفع معدلات التطعيم بشكل كبير في مختلف أنحاء العالم، خاصة وأن بعض اللقاحات تحتاج إلى عمليات تخزين صارمة وخبراء مختصين لاعطائها، ولكن هذه العوائق لن تكون موجودة مع لاصقات اللقاح.
