Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture Announces Yearlong Program

Doha: Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture, a partnership between Qatar Museums (QM), the United States Embassy in Doha and the Embassy of Qatar in the United States, today announced a wide-ranging program of exhibitions, festivals, bilateral exchanges, and events to be held in both nations throughout the year.

The Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture program will feature virtual and in-person events, including exhibitions and installations of works by Qatari and American artists; events showcasing the music, film, and fashion of both countries; sporting events; culinary experiences; entrepreneurship, innovation, STEM, and business events; and educational programs. All past, present, and future exhibitions, programs, and events will be featured on the official Years of Culture website, http://www.yearsofculture.qa/, where one can find the latest information and details about upcoming events.

HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani said, “On behalf of Qatar, I take great pleasure in announcing these programs, which show so vividly how the Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture will further align our two nations and strengthen the warm friendship they enjoy. Our vision nine years ago in establishing the Year of Culture program was to foster mutual understanding across borders on a humane, popular level by appreciating one another’s creative endeavours in celebrating Qatar’s win to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Now just under two years from Qatar hosting its biggest sporting event, our impressive roster of programs demonstrates the breadth and depth of the experiences to be shared throughout 2021 by the people of the United States and Qatar.”

Head of Years of Culture Aisha Al Attiya said, “We announce the program for the Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture with gratitude to the partners in both countries who have developed this extraordinary series of exhibitions, events, and experiences. Through their efforts, they have already demonstrated how this program can bring people together and foster meaningful cultural exchange. We look forward to inaugurating these events and activities, which will show the best of Qatar in the United States and the best of the United States in Qatar.”

HE Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the United States of America Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad Al-Thani said, “Qatar and the United States have been friends and allies for almost 50 years, and it’s exciting to be able to showcase a different and more accessible side of the partnership through the 2021 Qatar-USA Year of Culture. I’m honored to be a part of the effort to share Qatari culture with audiences across the United States, and to do the same with American culture in Qatar. These endeavors are what deepen the ties between our people, and it is an honor to help facilitate that.”

Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Qatar Greta C. Holtz said, “The Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture builds on the friendly diplomatic relations our two nations have shared since 1972. The Year of Culture provides an extraordinary framework within which we can come together to celebrate our longstanding relationship and forge new connections through people-to-people exchanges.”

In Qatar, the following programs will take place throughout the country over the course of the year, with new events being added:

International Women’s Day (March 8): A live virtual discussion organized by the US Embassy in Doha and Katara with prominent Qatari and American women on the topic of female empowerment.

The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Fashion and Art (March 24 – May 30): The exhibition, part of the Tasweer Photo Festival, draws together African and African Diaspora image-makers, many of whom are African-American, based in established creative industry centers across the globe.

Experimental Photography (March 24 – May 30): A series of installations by six contemporary American artists that prompt discussion and awareness of the expanded field of photography in the post-internet age. This exhibition is also part of the Tasweer Qatar Festival.

Seagrass Tales, Dugong Trails (March 2021): The National Museum of Qatar, in collaboration with ExxonMobil Research Qatar, will present a special exhibition on dugongs. These shy marine mammals have inhabited the waters surrounding Qatar’s peninsula for more than 7,500 years. The Arabian Gulf is home to the world’s second-largest population of dugongs, after Australia. Recently, the largest herds in the world, comprising between 600 to 700 dugongs, have been recorded in Qatar. Holding both a special cultural and environmental significance, the dugong was chosen as the museum’s official mascot.

US Embassy College Fair (April 2021): The fair will comprise seminars for school counsellors, parents, students, and other audiences, and will feature US colleges and universities.

Throughout the year, the US Embassy in Qatar works with Qatari partners to identify and nominate current and emerging leaders in the fields of cyber security, journalism, education, art, STEM, medicine, and the justice system, among others, to participate in the 3-week International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) exchange program and the 1-9 month Fulbright program, respectively.

Jeff Koons: Lost in America (Fall 2021): Qatar Museums will present the first survey in the Gulf region of the work of one of the best-known contemporary American artists. Curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Lost in America features more than sixty artworks drawn from Koons’s four-decades-long career, with each gallery introduced by an autobiographical text, compiled from interviews, statements, and quotes by the artist, emphasizing his memories, influences and fascination with American visual culture.

Throughout the year, Swalif, a series of virtual programs will take place discussing the US election system, entrepreneurship, mental health, media literacy, and education in the U.S., with Qatari social media influencer and comedian Hamad Al-Amari and invited American experts.

Cinema Under the Stars (November 2021): The Doha Film Institute and Qatar Museums will co-host a program of family-friendly film screenings that will take place outside, highlighting American films.

The following programs will take place throughout the United States over the course of 2021, with more details to follow in the coming weeks:

Calli-graffiti (Throughout 2021): A multi-city installation of street art that blends calligraphy and the Arabic language, as inspired by French-Tunisian artist eL Seed. The tour begins next month in Jersey City and will travel to other cities including Miami Beach during Art Basel.

Dessert Recipe Tradeoff (Spring 2021): Chefs from both countries will be challenged to make traditional desserts from the United States and Qatar.

Pearls of Wonder (Fall 2021): A pop-up exhibition featuring works by Qatari artists inspired by the history of the pearling industry in Qatar to open in New York City.

The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art in Washington D.C., and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha are working together to organize an exhibition of exceptional textiles from the collection of the Museum of Islamic Art to open in Washington in 2021.

Desert Drive-In Cultural Exchange (Fall 2021): Taking place outside of Los Angeles at Hummingbird Ranch, the film screening program is inspired by the rich history of nomadic Bedouin culture. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy films in an outdoor desert-like environment, a modern take on the American drive-in movie theater.

Desert Racing (Fall/Winter 2021): The unique experience will highlight the shared love of car racing in both Qatar and the United States through a series of races featuring Qatari and American drivers.

Made in Qatar (November 2021): The screening event will showcase works by Qatari filmmakers and accompanied talks at the Qatar America Institute for Culture in Washington, D.C.

Established in 2012 by Qatar Museums under the patronage of HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, the Years of Culture initiative works to highlight and strengthen ties between Qatar and a new partner nation each year.

وأضافت “والآن وقبل أقل من سنتين على استضافة قطر لأضخم حدث رياضي في تاريخها، توضح هذه القائمة الاستثنائية من البرامج مدى اتساع وعمق الخبرات التي سيتبادلها الشعبان القطري والأمريكي طيلة عام 2021”.

بدورها، قالت السيدة عائشة العطية رئيس قسم الأعوام الثقافية بمتاحف قطر: “نعلن عن برنامج العام الثقافي قطر – أمريكا 2021″، مثمنة جهود الشركاء في كلا البلدين، “والذين أتوا بهذه المجموعة من المعارض والفعاليات والتجارب التي تقرّب بين الشعوب، وتشجع التبادل الثقافي الهادف، وستعرض باقة من أفضل ما يمكن لكل بلد أن يقدمه للبلد الآخر”.

من جهته، أشار سعادة الشيخ مشعل بن حمد آل ثاني، سفير دولة قطر لدى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، إلى تمتع دولة قطر بعلاقات صداقة وتحالف مع الولايات المتحدة لما يقارب الخمسين عاما، موضحا أن برنامج العام الثقافي يظهر جانبا مختلفا من الشراكة بين البلدين.

وأضاف ” يشرّفني أن أكون جزءًا من الجهود المبذولة لمشاركة الثقافة القطرية مع الجماهير في جميع أنحاء الولايات المتحدة، ومشاركة الثقافة الأمريكية مع الجمهور في قطر.. هذه المساعي تعمق الروابط بين شعبينا، ويسعدني أن أساهم في تيسير ذلك.”

وفي تصريح مماثل، قالت السيدة جريتا سي هولتز القائم بأعمال سفارة الولايات المتحدة لدى قطر، إن “العام الثقافي قطر- أمريكا 2021 يرتكز على العلاقات الدبلوماسية الودية التي تربط بين البلدين منذ عام 1972، حيث يوفر العام الثقافي إطارًا استثنائيًا، يمكن من خلاله أن نجتمع معًا للاحتفال بعلاقتنا العريقة، وإقامة روابط جديدة من خلال التبادلات بين الأفراد”.

وذكرت متاحف قطر، في بيان اليوم، أهم الفعاليات التي يتضمنها برنامج العام الثقافي قطر – أمريكا 2021 ، في البلدين حيث تنطلق الفعاليات في قطر يوم /الإثنين/ المقبل من خلال احتفالية باليوم العالمي للمرأة ويتم خلاله تنظيم جلسة نقاشية افتراضية تنظمها كل من سفارة الولايات المتحدة في الدوحة وكتارا، مع سيدات قطريات وأمريكيات بارزات حول موضوع تمكين المرأة .

كما يتضمن البرنامج في قطر معرض التنوّع في الرؤى: التصوير الفوتوغرافي بين الفن والأزياء ويقام في الفترة من (24 مارس 30 مايو 2021 ، ويقام في إطار مهرجان “تصوير” للتصوير الفوتوغرافي في قطر، ويجمع بين صانعي الصور من إفريقيا والأفارقة الذين يقيمون خارج القارة، ومنهم العديد من الأمريكيين من أصول إفريقية، المتواجدين في مختلف المراكز الإبداعية عبر العالم ، إلى جانب معرض تصوير فوتوغرافي تجريبي في الفترة من (24 مارس 30 مايو): وفيه سلسلة من الأعمال التركيبية لستة فنانين أمريكيين معاصرين.

كما يقدم متحف قطر الوطني ضمن فعاليات العام الثقافي قطر- أمريكا 2021 ، معرض حكايات بقر البحر: رحلات في مروج الأعماق خلال مارس الجاري، بالتعاون مع إكسون موبيل للبحوث قطر، والمعرض عن حيوان بقر البحر (الأطوم)، حيث عاشت هذه الثدييات البحرية الخجولة في المياه القطرية لأكثر من 7500 عام.

ويُعد الخليج العربي ثاني أكبر تجمع لأبقار البحر في العالم بعد أستراليا، وقد تم مؤخرًا في دولة قطر تسجيل أكبر عدد تجمع لتلك الحيوانات في العالم، حيث احتوى القطيع الواحد على 600 إلى 700 من أبقار البحر، فضلا عن معرض السفارة الأمريكية الجامعي في (أبريل 2021): ويتضمن ندوات لمرشدي المدارس وأولياء الأمور والطلاب والجمهور العام، وسيضم الكليات والجامعات الأمريكية.

وستقوم سفارة الولايات المتحدة في قطر، طوال العام، بالتعاون مع شركاء قطريين على ترشيح القيادات الحالية والناشئة في مجالات تشمل الأمن السيبراني، والصحافة، والتعليم، والفن، والعلوم والتكنولوجيا والهندسة والرياضيات، والطب، ونظام العدالة، وغيرها من المجالات، للمشاركة لمدة ثلاثة أسابيع في برنامج التبادل الدولي : برنامج الزائر الدولي القيادي، وما بين 1و9 أشهر في برنامج التبادل فولبرايت، على التوالي.

كما يتضمن البرنامج الثقافي في قطر معرض : جيف كونز: تائه في أمريكا (خريف 2021) لأعمال أحد أشهر الفنانين المعاصرين الأمريكيين ، كما ستقام على مدار العام مجموعة من البرامج الافتراضية بعنوان “سوالف” لمناقشة نظام الانتخابات الأمريكية، وريادة الأعمال، والصحة النفسية، والثقافة الإعلامية، وقطاع التعليم في الولايات المتحدة، مع المؤثر على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي والممثل الكوميدي القطري حمد العمري، وعدد من الخبراء الأمريكيين ، إضافة إلى برنامج لعروض الأفلام العائلية في الهواء الطلق في نوفمبر المقبل، تقدمه متاحف قطر بالتعاون مع مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام، مع تسليط الضوء على الأفلام الأمريكية.

أما البرنامج في الولايات المتحدة فسوف يقام في جميع أنحائها على مدار عام 2021، ومن أهم ما يتضمنه : كاليجرافيتي (طوال عام 2021): تركيبات فن الشارع في عدد من المدن يمزج بين الخط واللغة العربية، مستوحى من الفنان التونسي الفرنسي إل سيد، وتنطلق الجولة أبريل المقبل في مدينة جيرسي، وتنتقل إلى مدن أخرى بما في ذلك ميامي بيتش في معرض آرت بازل، إلى جانب تبادل وصفات الحلويات (ربيع 2021): حيث سيواجه الطهاة من كلا البلدين تحديًا لصنع حلويات تقليدية من قطر والولايات المتحدة.

كما يشمل البرنامج معرض : درر العجائب في (خريف 2021): معرض منبثق ، وسيتم افتتاحه في مدينة نيويورك، ويضم أعمالًا لفنانين قطريين مستوحاة من تاريخ صناعة اللؤلؤ في قطر، كما يعمل كل من جاليري فيرر للفنون، وجاليري آرثر أم ساكلر، ومتحف سميثسونيان الوطني للفن الآسيوي في العاصمة واشنطن، مع متحف الفن الإسلامي في الدوحة لتنظيم معرض منسوجات استثنائية من مجموعة متحف الفن الإسلامي في واشنطن العام الحالي إلى جانب عرض سينمائي في الهواء الطلق للتبادل الثقافي في الصحراء (خريف 2021): يقام في مزرعة هامينجبرد قرب مدينة لوس أنجلوس، ويستلهم برنامج عرض الأفلام من التاريخ الغني لثقافة البدو الرحل، وهي تجربة حديثة في سينما السيارات الأمريكية التقليدية.

كما يتضمن البرنامج سباق السيارات في الصحراء في (ربيع / خريف 2021): وستركّز هذه التجربة الفريدة على الحب المشترك لسباق السيارات في كل من قطر والولايات المتحدة من خلال سلسلة من السباقات يشارك فيها سائقون قطريون وأمريكيون ، فضلا عن فعالية سينمائية بعنوان صنع في قطر في (نوفمبر 2021): ستعرض أعمال صانعي أفلام قطريين، ويرافقها محاضرات في معهد قطر أمريكا للثقافة في العاصمة الأمريكية واشنطن إلى جانب عدد من الفعاليات الأخرى التي سيتم الإعلان عنها في الأسابيع القادمة.

ويحظى برنامج العام الثقافي قطر – أمريكا 2021 برعاية الخطوط الجوية القطرية وإكسون موبيل، وهما الراعيان البلاتينيان للعام الثقافي بين البلدين.

وقال سعادة السيد أكبر الباكر الرئيس التنفيذي لمجموعة الخطوط الجوية القطرية: “يسرّ الخطوط الجوية القطرية أن تكون شريك الطيران الرسمي للعام الثقافي قطر – أمريكا 2021 ، لمدة عامٍ سيكون مليئا بالبرامج سيمكن المجتمعين نحو مزيد من التفاهم المتبادل”.

بدوره، قال السيد دومينيك جينيتي الرئيس والمدير العام لإكسون موبيل قطر:” يسر شركة إكسون موبيل قطر أن تكون الراعي البلاتيني للعام الثقافي قطر أمريكا 2021. كشركة أمريكية تمتد علاقتها مع قطر لأكثر من ثلاثة عقود، تعتبر هذه المبادرة مهمة لنا لأنها ستقدم بلدينا كمركزين للفرص الإبداعية والثقافية”.

يذكر أن مبادرة الأعوام الثقافية تأسست عام 2012 من قبل متاحف قطر، تحت رعاية سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني، رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر، بهدف تسليط الضوء على الروابط الوثيقة بين قطر ودولة شريكة جديدة كل عام وتوطيدها.
