London: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Wednesday that the coronavirus restrictions be lifted gradually, based on a “cautious and prudent approach.
In press statements reported by the BBC, Johnson said he would set out “what we can” in a road map for easing the restrictions on Monday.
Speaking at a mass vaccination centre in Cwmbran, south Wales, Johnson said relaxation of measures would be done in “stages” and that the reopening of hospitality was one of the last things to return after the first lockdown.
“You have to remember from last year that we opened up hospitality fully as one of the last things that we did because there is obviously an extra risk of transmission from hospitality,” he said.
Asked whether he agreed with a data-led approach, Johnson said “I do think that’s absolutely right” and said the relaxation of measures will be “based firmly on a cautious and prudent approach”, in such a way as to be “irreversible”.
“We want to be going one way from now on, based on the incredible vaccination rollout,” he said.
His announcement followed a call from scientists for a data-led approach to lifting measures.
Official figures show the UK has recorded a further 12,718 COVID cases and another 738 deaths within 28 days of a positive test. Last Wednesday, 13,013 cases and 1,001 deaths were reported.
A total of 15,940,972 people have now received the first dose of a vaccine.
The prime minister, his Cabinet and advisers will this week assess data from England’s third lockdown, before setting out on Feb. 22 their plan to gradually lift restrictions.

وأضاف جونسون، في تصريحات صحفية نقلتها هيئة الإذاعة البريطانية /بي بي سي/، أن حكومته ستنشر خارطة طريق للخروج التدريجي من حالة الإغلاق يوم /الاثنين/ المقبل، مضيفا أنه يسعى “لأن تسير البلاد قدما في اتجاه واحد من الآن فصاعدا وفقا لتطورات حملة التطعيم الضخمة التي نقوم بها”.
وأوضح أن قطاع المطاعم والمقاهي والفنادق سيكون آخر القطاعات التي يتم فتحها للجمهور لأن مخاطر انتقال الفيروس بها أعلى من بقية القطاعات، مشيرا إلى أن عملية إعادة فتح الأنشطة الاقتصادية ستتم بشكل حذر.
وأكد جونسون أن قرارات الحكومة بشأن رفع حالة الإغلاق ستعتمد بالأساس على بيانات وتطورات حالة تفشي الوباء في البلاد، وليس على تواريخ محددة لرفع القيود.
ومن المقرر أن يعود الطلاب إلى المدارس يوم الثامن من مارس المقبل، على أن يتم فتح المحال التجارية والأعمال بشكل تدريجي في مراحل تالية.
جدير بالذكر أن السلطات الصحية تمكنت حتى الآن من تطعيم نحو 17 مليون شخص حتى الآن بلقاح مضاد للفيروس، في أكبر حملة تطعيم تشهدها البلاد طوال تاريخها، فيما تسعى الحكومة لتطعيم جميع البالغين قبل حلول الخريف المقبل.
تجدر الإشارة إلى أن عدد حالات الإصابة بالفيروس في بريطانيا بلغت نحو 4.1 مليون حالة، وهو أعلى عدد إصابات في أوروبا والرابع عالميا، فيما بلغ عدد الوفيات 119159، وهو الأعلى أوروبيا والخامس على مستوى العالم.
