More Than 100 Harmful Substances in Plastic Toys

Copenhagen: A new scientific study has revealed that more than 100 harmful substances exist in plastic toys.

The study included the results of 25 studies devoted to children’s plastic toys, and researchers described 419 substances involved in the synthesis of hard, soft and foam toys, including 126 hazardous substances, such as carcinogens.

“We found information on the chemical composition of materials used to make toys, to know how children interact with them, do they put them in their mouths and how many toys a child has,” said Nicolò Aurisano, senior researcher from the Danish Technical University.

Scientists believe that the reason for the continued use of toxic substances in the manufacture of plastic toys, despite the existence of legislation in many countries prohibiting their use, is the lack of international control over the production of such toys, and that manufacturers of children’s toys do not know exactly the composition of the materials used in the production process, i.e., the presence of carcinogens and harmful substances in recycled plastic, is not excluded from the start.

The researchers explained that 27 hazardous substances out of a total of 126 substances identified by the study, such as phthalates, flame retardants and plasticizers, which are prohibited by legislation, were discovered in children’s toys which were included in the study. the researchers said. They also discovered the use of 17 potentially harmful to health chemicals in the manufacture of children’s toys, which were not included in the list of hazardous substances for health.

Based on these results, researchers advise parents not to buy plastic toys, or at least reduce their number until strict state legislation is put in place by countries to solve this problem.
