QU Restructures Pharmacy Curriculum According to Latest Global Practices

Doha: Qatar University (QU)’s Board of Regents approved the restructuring of the pharmacy curriculum to align with the latest developments in pharmacy education globally and in North America, Europe and New Zealand, Qatar University College of Pharmacy (QU-CPH) set out to introduce curricular reform and upgrade the level of curricular integration into the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BSc Pharm) program.

QU said in a statement that the new plan includes a series of eight (four credits) modular systems-based courses will be part of the new curriculum, and that these modules cover different diseases and medications management including cardiology, oncology, respiratory, infectious diseases, endocrinology, and others. These courses will integrate at high level the different disciplines including pathophysiology, pharmacology and pharmacotherapy rather than having them a separate courses to avoid repetition and redundancies within the program.

The BSc Pharm program currently consists of 173 credit hours and 5 years of study. With the new approved modular curriculum, students will complete 165 credit hours in 5 years of study, with a program that provides graduating students a better approach to patient-centered care, enriches the student experience, optimizes integration between courses and updates the overall assessment plan. The number of experiential hours completed by the students remains the same.

International experts were invited to share their experience in integrated and modular design and then proposed changes in the curriculum were shared with three international consultants for review and feedback. The current curriculum will be phased out gradually and the new curriculum will be started gradually starting September 2021.

QU-CPH Dean Dr. Mohamed Diab commented: “No doubt that the restructuring of CPH BSc. Modular Curriculum as well as the relaunch and restructuring of the part time PharmD Program will open new gates, chances and doors of learning to our respected students. This is a huge achievement and milestone for the College of Pharmacy.”

He added, “This reflects our commitment to our mission to always prepare our students to provide optimal pharmaceutical care and advance health care outcomes. Moreover, we are always proud to align with QU Strategy of excellence, valuable initiatives and interest in academic development.”

QU-CPH Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Maguy El Hajj commented: “It is a huge accomplishment in pharmacy education and practice in Qatar, and the region. It will definitely promote a greater approach for patient centered care in Qatar and will enrich the students experience and achievement of the Pharmacy program outcomes.”

In addition, the Board of Regents approved the relaunch and restructuring of the qualifying courses within the part time Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program at Qatar University College of Pharmacy. The part-time PharmD program targets practicing pharmacists with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree who are interested in pursuing an advanced degree in clinical pharmacy.

The newly restructured qualifying courses were reduced from 11 courses (23 credits) to 8 courses (20 credits) and will integrate a blended learning approach with online and face-to-face sessions that will provide flexibility to complete the courses over a 1-to-2-year period prior to entering the PharmD program.

Doctor of Pharmacy Director Dr. Bridget Javed commented: “The restructuring is aligned with QU’s strategic goals and the mission of the College of Pharmacy to advance the pharmacy profession while improving the quality of health provided to the Qatari society. With the restructuring of the qualifying courses, pharmacists will benefit as the learning will be tailored to their individual needs and foster independent, self-study to allow flexibility to pursue an advanced degree while continuing to practice as a pharmacist.”

الدوحة: شرعت جامعة قطر في تطوير المناهج الدراسية في برنامج بكالوريوس العلوم في الصيدلة، ورفع مستوى تكامل المناهج الدراسية، تنفيذا لما أقره مجلس أمناء الجامعة بخصوص إعادة هيكلة التخصص لتتوافق مع أحدث التطورات والممارسات على مستوى العالم.

وقالت الجامعة في بيان إن الخطة الجديدة تتضمن سلسلة من ثماني مواد (أربع ساعات معتمدة) وتشمل أمراض أجهزة مختلفة والأدوية المصاحبة لها كأمراض القلب والأورام والجهاز التنفسي والأمراض المعدية والغدد الصماء وغيرها، حيث ستدمج هذه المواد وعلى مستوى عالٍ مع التخصصات المختلفة بما في ذلك الفيزيولوجيا المرضية وعلم الأدوية والعلاج الدوائي لتجنب التكرار داخل البرنامج.

وأوضحت أنه مع المنهج المعياري المعتمد الجديد، سيكمل الطلاب 165 ساعة معتمدة في 5 سنوات من الدراسة بدلا من 173 ساعة المعتمدة حاليا.. مضيفة أن الهيكلة الجديدة توفر للطلبة المتخرجين منهجًا أفضل للرعاية التي ترتكز على المريض، وتثري تجربة الطالب، وتحسن التكامل بين المواد الدراسية، بينما تبقى عدد ساعات التدريب الميداني دون تغيير.

وأشارت إلى أنه تمت دعوة خبراء دوليين لمشاركة خبراتهم في التصميم المتكامل والنموذجي للمنهج الجديد الذي سيبدأ اعتبارا من سبتمبر المقبل، مع شروع الكلية في إلغاء المنهج الحالي تدريجياً.

وقال العميد الدكتور محمد دياب “لا شك أن إعادة هيكلة برنامج البكالوريوس لكلية الصيدلة بالإضافة إلى إعادة إطلاق وهيكلة برنامج دكتور الصيدلة بدوام جزئي سيفتح فرصا وأبوابا جديدة للتعلم”.. معتبرا التوجه الجديد إنجازا ضخما وعلامة فارقة لكلية الصيدلة.

وأكد أن المنهج الجديد يعكس التزام الجامعة في إعداد كوادر مؤهلة تأهيلا عاليا لتقديم الرعاية الصيدلانية المثلى ونتائج الرعاية الصحية المتقدمة.. مضيفا “نحن فخورون دائمًا بالتوافق مع استراتيجية التميز في جامعة قطر والمبادرات القيمة والاهتمام بالتطوير الأكاديمي”.

بدورها، قالت الدكتورة ماغي الحاج مساعد العميد للشؤون الأكاديمية في الكلية “إن المنهج الجديد إنجاز كبير في تعليم الصيدلة وممارستها في قطر والمنطقة، وهو يتوافق بشكل جيد مع رؤية جامعة قطر ورسالتها وأهدافها الاستراتيجية”.

كما شرعت الجامعة في إعادة هيكلة “برنامج دكتور الصيدلة بدوام جزئي”، والذي يستهدف الصيادلة الممارسين الحاصلين على بكالوريوس في الصيدلة ممن يرغبون في الحصول على درجة متقدمة في الصيدلة السريرية.

ووفقا للهيكلة الجديدة، سيتم تخفيض المواد التي أعيد هيكلتها حديثًا من 11 مادة (23 ساعة معتمدة) إلى 8 مواد (20 ساعة معتمدة) متبعة نظام التعليم المدمج بكونه مزيجًا بين التعليم الافتراضي ووجهاً لوجه والتي ستوفر المرونة لإكمال المواد خلال مدة تتراوح بين سنة وسنتين قبل دخول برنامج دكتور الصيدلة.

وقالت الدكتورة بريدجيت جافيد مديرة برنامج دكتور الصيدلة: “تتماشى إعادة الهيكلة مع الأهداف الاستراتيجية لجامعة قطر ورسالة كلية الصيدلة لتعزيز مهنة الصيدلة مع تحسين جودة الصحة المقدمة للمجتمع القطري”.

وأشارت إلى أن المستفيد من إعادة الهيكلة هم الصيادلة الممارسون “حيث سيتم تصميم التعلم وفقًا لاحتياجاتهم الفردية وتعزيز الدراسة الذاتية المستقلة للسماح بمتابعة درجة متقدمة مع الاستمرار في الممارسة كصيدلي”.
