Your car is spying on you more than your phone

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has purchased technology that downloads large amounts of personal information stored inside cars, according to a federal contract reviewed by The Intercept, illustrating the serious risks of connecting your car to your smartphone.

The contract, shared with the site by the Latin Rights Advocacy Organization (Mijente), shows that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Administration known as CBP paid the Swedish data extraction company MSAB for a package of programs, including five Berla vehicle forensic tool kits, according to Al-Jazeera.

A related document suggests that CBP believes the software package will be “critical to CBP investigations, as it can provide evidence, not only with regard to vehicle use, but also information obtained through mobile devices associated with the INFOS.

According to the document, the iVe software group was the only tool available to buy that could take advantage of these systems.

According to the Berla founder, the seriousness of the process of pulling data from cars is that many drivers are unaware of the fact that their cars know a lot of information about them, often containing highly sensitive information that has been inadvertently transmitted from smartphones.

MSAB promises police access to a wide range of sensitive personal information stored in information and entertainment controllers and many other computers used by modern vehicles.

MSAB claims that this data can include “modern destinations, preferred locations, call logs, contact lists, SMS messages, emails, photos, videos, social media summaries, and navigation history for every place the car was in”.

MSAB even promotes the ability to recover deleted data, “identify known partners and create communication patterns between them.

MSAB says the group also has the ability to detect certain events that most car owners may not realize until they are recorded, such as “when and where the car lights are turned on, which doors were opened and closed in specific locations, gear cycles, odometer reading, ignition cycles, speed records and more,” in other words, The surveillance goes beyond the car itself”.

iVe is in line with more than 20 types of vehicles and is rapidly expanding acquisition and decryption capabilities, according to MSAB.

Civil liberties monitors say the Customs and Border Protection contract raises concerns that these types of extraction tools could be used more broadly to circumvent constitutional protections against unacceptable searches.

“The scope that CBP can benefit from such a contract is staggering,” said Mohamed Tajsar, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

MSAB spokeswoman Carolyn Eettander declined to comment on the privacy and civil liberties risks posed by iVe programs.

When asked whether the company retained any guidance on the use of its technology, she said the company “does not establish a customer policy or a use policy.

MSAB’s contract with CBP last year lasted until February 28, 2021, and was with the agency’s Forensic and Scientific Department, laboratories and scientific services, and included training on how to use MSAB equipments.
