Qatar Investment Authority takes stake in vaccine-maker CureVac

Doha: The Qatar Investment Authority (Hukoomi) has taken a stake in the German company “CureVac”, a vaccine manufacturer specializing in biotechnology, which is developing an anti-Coronavirus vaccine, which is expected to start production this year. According to a report by Al-Jazeera, the Authority acquired a stake of the German company “CureVac” for $ 200 million, whose vaccine is just around the corner.
Company president Franz-Werner Haas expected, for his part, that the company would produce 600 million doses of the vaccine by the end of this year, and about a billion more doses in 2022. According to Al-Jazeera, CureVac is currently developing the vaccine, which is based on the model of the vaccine developed by the German company BioNTech in cooperation with the American company Pfizer, on an active substance called messenger DNA “mRNA”, which is a type of intermediate particles that include instructions production of proteins. The CureVac researchers provided mRNA with instructions for producing the emerging coronavirus protein for use in the anti-virus vaccine.
Through cooperation with the giant German pharmaceutical Bayer, CureVac hopes to be able to launch its vaccine against Coronavirus this summer.
Qatar’s ambassador to Germany, Mohammed Jaham Al-Kuwari, said Last July, that Qatar’s investments in Germany amount to 25 billion euros (about 30 billion dollars), and there are 300 German companies in the Qatari market.
His Excellency also praised in an interview with the magazine of the German Society for the Middle and Near East, “NUMOV” in its fourth annual issue, on the level of Qatari-German relations, describing it as a “close” in various fields, especially in the economic field, as Qatar invests in major German companies and aspires to continue strengthening relations with Germany.
His Excellency added that Qatar and Germany have close relations in various fields, especially in the economic field through investment and opportunities available to both sides, pointing out that the economy of the State of Qatar is continuously booming, as Qatar seeks to diversify its economic sources by investing in major companies such as Siemens and Deutsche Bank and Volkswagen.
Last October, the President of the Qatar Chamber, His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani, after a joint meeting of the Executive Office, the Board of Directors and the General Assembly of the German Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry, revealed in a statement that trade exchange between Qatar and Germany amounted to about 946 million dollars during the first half of 2020, despite Precautionary measures due to the outbreak of the new Coronavirus. This is the latest step by the Qatar Investment Authority as part of a strategy to expand its global investments in the fields of biotechnology and renewable energy.
On January 7th, the fund acquired a 50 % stake in the Italian “green energy” company, Enel, as part of an agreement between the two sides to develop renewable energy projects in Africa, without mentioning the value of the deal. Preceded that in the week of December 31, the Qatar Investment Authority announced that it had acquired a 12 % stake in the American “Fluence Energy”, for $ 125 million. Referred to as “CureVac”, founded in 2000, it is one of the world leaders in using DNA in developing vaccines and antibodies for infectious diseases.

الدوحة: استحوذ جهاز قطر للاستثمار (حكومي) على حصة في شركة “كيورفاك” الألمانية لتصنيع اللقاحات والمتخصصة بالتكنولوجيا الحيوية، والتي تطور لقاحا مضادا لفيروس كورونا يتوقع بدء إنتاجه هذا العام.
وبحسب تقرير للجزيرة فقد استحوذ الجهاز على حصة من شركة “كيورفاك” الألمانية مقابل 200 مليون دولار، والتي بات لقاحها قاب قوسين أو أدنى من الاعتماد.
من جهته توقع رئيس الشركة فرانز فيرنر هاس أن تنتج الشركة 600 مليون جرعة من اللقاح بحلول نهاية العام الجاري، ونحو مليار جرعة أخرى في عام 2022.
وبحسب الجزيرة تقوم كيورفاك حاليا بتطوير اللقاح، الذي يعتمد على غرار اللقاح الذي طورته شركة بيونتك الألمانية بالتعاون مع شركة فايزر الأميركية، على مادة فعالة يطلق عليها الحمض النووي المرسال “إم آر إن إيه” (mRNA)، وهي نوع من الجزئيات الوسيطة التي تتضمن تعليمات إنتاج بروتينات. وقام باحثو كيورفاك بتزويد مادة “إم آر إن إيه” بتعليمات لإنتاج بروتين فيروس كورونا المستجد لاستخدامه في اللقاح المضاد للفيروس.
ومن خلال التعاون مع شركة الأدوية الألمانية العملاقة باير (Bayer)، تأمل كيورفاك أن تكون قادرة على إطلاق لقاحها ضد كورونا هذا الصيف.
وفي يوليو الماضي قال سفير دولة قطر في ألمانيا محمد جهام الكواري إن استثمارات قطر في ألمانيا تبلغ 25 مليار يورو (حوالي 30 مليار دولار)، وهناك 300 شركة ألمانية بالسوق القطرية.
كما أثنى سعادته في مقابلة مع مجلة الجمعية الألمانية للشرق الأوسط والأدنى “نوموف” في عددها السنوي الرابع، على مستوى العلاقات القطرية الألمانية، واصفا إياها بأنها “وثيقة” في مختلف المجالات وخصوصا في المجال الاقتصادي، حيث تستثمر قطر في الشركات الألمانية الكبرى وتطمح لمواصلة تعزيز العلاقات مع ألمانيا.
وأضاف سعادته أن قطر وألمانيا لهما علاقات وثيقة في مختلف المجالات، وخاصة في المجال الاقتصادي من خلال الاستثمار والفرص المتاحة لكلا الجانبين، لافتا إلى أن اقتصاد دولة قطر في ازدهار مستمر، حيث تسعى قطر إلى تنويع مصادرها الاقتصادية من خلال الاستثمار في الشركات الكبرى مثل سيمنز ودويتشه بنك وفولكس فاغن.
وفي أكتوبر الماضي كشف رئيس غرفة قطر سعادة الشيخ خليفة بن جاسم آل ثاني، بعد اجتماع مشترك للمكتب التنفيذي ومجلس الإدارة والجمعية العامة لغرفة التجارة والصناعة العربية الألمانية، في بيان أن التبادل التجاري بين قطر وألمانيا بلغ نحو 946 مليون دولار خلال النصف الأول من 2020، رغم الإجراءات الاحترازية بسبب تفشي فيروس كورونا المستجد.
وهذه أحدث خطوة لجهاز قطر للاستثمار في إطار استراتيجية لتوسيع استثماراته العالمية في مجالي التكنولوجيا الحيوية والطاقة المتجددة.
وفي 7 يناير الماضي، استحوذ الصندوق على حصة تبلغ 50 بالمئة في شركة “إينيل للطاقة الخضراء” الإيطالية، ضمن اتفاق بين الجانبين على تطوير مشاريع الطاقة المتجددة في إفريقيا، دون أن يذكر قيمة الصفقة.
وسبق ذلك بأسبوع 31 ديسمبر إعلان جهاز قطر للاستثمار استحواذه على حصة تبلغ 12 بالمئة بشركة “فلوانس إنيرجي” الأمريكية، مقابل 125 مليون دولار.
يشار إلى “كيورفاك” تأسست عام 2000، وهي إحدى الشركات الرائدة عالميا باستخدام الحمض النووي في تطوير لقاحات وأجسام مضادة للأمراض المعدية،
