GENEVA: World Cup matches will play to full stadiums in Qatar next year, global soccer body FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Monday.
“I am very, very confident (it) will be incredible, will have the same magic, uniting the world,” he told a virtual meeting in Geneva. “We will be back to where we have to be.”
World Cup players were not a priority group for vaccines against COVID-19, he said.
With 3,000 soccer players due to travel internationally for World Cup qualifying games next month, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Monday all will conform to health rules in the coronavirus pandemic.
“We will certainly not take any risk for the health of anyone when we play football,” Infantino said in a World Health Organization news conference.
Delays in the 2022 World Cup qualifying program in most continents led FIFA last year to create new games dates next January. They will help make up the backlog in an increasingly tight schedule with broadcasting rights already sold.
In Asia, 40 national teams are due to resume qualifying groups that last played in November 2019.
A total of 135 teams are due to play World Cup qualifiers next month, and 48 more have preliminary games for the 2022 African Cup of Nations.
“We will see where we can play, in what conditions,” the FIFA leader said, pledging to “do it by adhering to a clear health protocol.”
Many of the players due to return home for national duty play for clubs in Europe, including in England which is experiencing an aggressive new variant of COVID-19.
FIFA eased its rules last year that require clubs to release players to national teams. Exemptions were offered if players had to travel to countries imposing mandatory quarantine or self-isolation for at least five days upon arrival or their return.

وبدأت بعض الدول في تطعيم الرياضيين ضمن خطط للاستعداد لأولمبياد طوكيو، المقرر أن ينطلق في 23 يوليو، وسط انتقادات.
لكن إنفانتينو الذي دشن حملة مشتركة مع منظمة الصحة العالمية لدعم “الحصول العادل على اللقاحات” أبلغ مؤتمرا صحفيا أنه لا يؤيد تصدر اللاعبين الصفوف لتلقي اللقاحات.
وقال: “الأولوية في الحصول على اللقاح للأشخاص الذين يواجهون مخاطر والعاملين بالصحة، وهذا واضح جدا في ذهني ولا اعتبر أن لاعبي كرة القدم من المجموعات التي تحظى بالأولوية في هذه القضية”.
وأضاف: “بالطبع سيكون من الموصى به الحصول على اللقاحات ضمن إجراءات السلامة خلال أشهر قادمة عندما يتعلق الأمر بمسابقات دولية والسفر وسيكون الأولمبياد في الصيف فقط”.
“لكن هذا سيتم بالتأكيد مع احترام الأولوية في التوزيع فهناك أشخاص يواجهون الخطر ويجب أن تكون لهم الأولوية بالطبع وليسوا من لاعبي كرة القدم أو المسؤولين”.
ومع ذلك يثق إنفانتينو في أن مباريات كأس العالم 2022 في قطر ستقام في ملاعب ممتلئة.
وتابع “أثق تماما في أن البطولة ستكون مذهلة وسيكون لها نفس السحر وستعمل على توحيد عشاق كرة القدم في العالم”.
وستقام البطولة في قطر بين نوفمبر وديسمبر 2022 بمشاركة 32 منتخبا.
وعن الحكمة من إقامة مباريات دولية وسط الوضع الحالي، شدد إنفانتينو على أنها تقام وسط “بروتوكولات صحية واضحة لا تخاطر بصحة أي شخص”.
“يجب أن نتعامل بتوازن دائما لكن يجب احترام قرارات الحكومات والموقف مختلف جدا حول العالم”.
“سنراقب الموقف في الأسابيع المقبلة والوضع يمكن أن يتغير من أسبوع لآخر”.
“ستلعب المباريات الدولية في مارس وبعدها سنقيم الموقف ونرى أين يمكن أن تقام وتحت أي ظروف ولكن لن نخاطر بصحة أي شخص بالتأكيد عند اللعب”.
