European telescope monitors the movement of five planets outside the solar system

Geneva: European Space Telescope (CHEOPS) has revealed that five of the distant exoplanets from the solar system are moving in a regular and consistent manner.

A recent study published in the journal Astronomy and astrophysics showed that this phenomenon has never been observed in stars whose diversity calls for a review of theories about their composition.

These planets are called exoplanets because they are outside the solar system, and at the same level they orbit their star T.O.I.-178 on a highly accurate temporal basis, about 200 light-years from Earth.

“We know only five other systems that operate according to this mechanism,” said Adrian Lilio, lead author of the study and an astronomer at the University of Geneva Observatory, in which a group of exoplanets are in harmony with their star.

Yannick Albert, an astrophysicist at the University of Bern who co-authored the study, said the importance of the movement of these planets lies in the fact that they are likely to remain unchanged since they were formed, as if they were “a frozen system since the end of its millions of years of formation,”, as this “somewhat fragile” balance has not been compromised in more than two billion years after this stage to date.

Observation sought by the European Space Agency’s CHEOPS telescope, which has been in Earth’s orbit since December 2019 with the aim of identifying first specifications for extrasolar planets, awaiting the use of its future successor, the Hubble telescope, which will be launched this year and is owned by James Webb.

The CHEOPS team seeks a better understanding of the formation of planetary systems and to detect exoplanets located at a greater distance than TOE-178.

جنيف: كشف التلسكوب الفضائي الأوروبي “كيوبس” أن خمسةً من الكواكب الخارجية البعيدة من المجموعة الشمسية، تتحرك بطريقة منتظمة ومتناسقة .

وأوضحت دراسة حديثة نشرتها مجلة “أسترونومي أند أستروفيزيكس”، أن هذه الظاهرة لم يسبق أن رُصدت لدى النجوم التي يدعو تنوعها إلى مراجعة النظريات المتعلقة بتكوينها.

وسميت هذه الكواكب خارجية نظراً إلى وجودها خارج المنظومة الشمسية، وتدور على المستوى نفسه حول نجمها “تي أو آي-178” بانتظام وقتي شديد الدقة، على بعد نحو 200 سنة ضوئية من الأرض.

وقال أدريان ليليو المعدّ الرئيسي للدراسة وعالم الفلك في مرصد جامعة جنيف “لا نعرف سوى خمس منظومات أخرى تعمل وفق هذه الآلية ” التي تتناسق فيها مجموعة من الكواكب الخارجية في تناغم مداري حول نجمها.

وبدوره أوضح يانيك ألبير عالم الفيزياء الفلكية في جامعة برن الذي شارك في إعداد الدراسة، أن أهمية حركة هذه الكواكب تكمن في كونها لا تزال على الأرجح من دون تغيير منذ أن تشكّلت، كما لو أنها “منظومة مجمّدة منذ انتهاء مرحلة تكوينها التي تستمر ملايين السنين”، إذ لم يطرأ ما يخلّ بهذا التوازن “الهش إلى حد ما” خلال أكثر من ملياري سنة تلت هذه المرحلة وصولاً إلى اليوم.

ومن المفترض أن تتواصل المراقبة بواسطة التلسكوب “كيوبس” التابع لوكالة الفضاء الأوروبية، والذي وُضِع في مدار الأرض منذ ديسمبر 2019 بهدف تحديد مواصفات أولى للكواكب من خارج المجموعة الشمسية، في انتظار استخدام خَلَفه المستقبلي التلسكوب “هابل” الذي سيُطلَق خلال السنة الجارية، ويملكه جيمس ويب.

ويسعى فريق “كيوبس” إلى فهم أفضل لتكوين منظومات الكواكب، وإلى الكشف عن الكواكب الخارجية التي تقع على مسافة أكبر من “تي أو إي-178”.
