US President Expects COVID-19 Fatalities to Reach 600 Thousand

Washington: US President Joe Biden warned that it will take months to turn around the COVID-19 pandemic’s trajectory and that fatalities are expected to dramatically rise over the next few weeks.
“A lot of America is hurting. The virus is surging. Were 400,000 dead expected to reach well over 600,000,” Biden said on Friday before signing two executive orders designed to reduce hunger and bolster workers rights amid the pandemic.
The United States surpassed 400,000 total COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, with a quarter of those coming over the previous 36 days, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. On Bidens first full day as president on Thursday, he told reporters following a meeting with his COVID-19 advisors that the nation would likely top 500,000 COVID-19 deaths in February.
The President signed two executive orders on Friday. The first increases food aid for children who rely on school meals as a main source for nutrition, but are unable to access them because of remote learning. It also creates a guarantee that workers can access unemployment benefits if they refuse a job on the grounds that it could jeopardize their health.
The second is aimed at expanding protections for federal workers, by restoring collective bargaining rights and promoting a $15 hourly minimum wage.
Biden unveiled his COVID-19 plan on Thursday, which starts with a national vaccination campaign in order to meet the President’s goal of administering 100 million shots. That is enough to cover 50 million Americans with vaccines that require two doses, in his first 100 days in office.
The day after being sworn-in, Biden signed at least 10 executive orders, memorandums and directives focused on tackling the pandemic, which, as of Thursday afternoon, has claimed the lives of more than 408,000 Americans and infected more than 24 million in the US.
Biden signed executive orders ramping up supplies for vaccination, testing and personal protective equipment and another boosting development of therapeutics to treat COVID-19.

وكشف الرئيس الأمريكي، أول أمس، عن خطة إدارته لمواجهة الوباء.. متهما الإدارة السابقة بالفشل في مواجهة الوباء.
ونقلت قناة /الحرة/ عن بايدن قوله إنه أطلق برنامجا خاصا بحملة التطعيم ضد فيروس كورونا.. موضحا أن استراتيجيته تهدف لتوزيع 100 مليون جرعة من اللقاح في أول مئة يوم من إدارته.
ويسعى بايدن لتمرير حزمة مساعدات بقيمة 1.9 تريليون دولار لدعم الاقتصاد واستراتيجيته لمكافحة كورونا.. موضحا أنه يتطلع للعمل مع قادة الكونغرس من الحزبين للتعامل مع الجائحة، “سنطلب من الكونغرس زيادة التمويل للعاملين في المجالات الطبية”.
وأعلن الرئيس الأمريكي أنه يعتزم فتح “آلاف” مراكز التطعيم لتسريع حملة التلقيح ضد /كوفيد-19/ في الولايات المتحدة، داعيا إلى محاربة حملات التضليل ضد أخذ لقاح كورونا.
وشدد على أهمية الكمامة في الوقاية من المرض، وقال إنه “يجب ارتداء الكمامات من الآن حتى أبريل المقبل”.
ولدعم استراتيجيته، وقع الرئيس الأمريكي /الخميس/ على عدة أوامر تنفيذية للتصدي للوباء.
ومع كل ذلك، حذر بايدن من أن “أزمة كورونا ستزداد سوءا قبل أن تتحسن”.. مشددا على أن إدارته ستكون صريحة وأمينة في ما يخص التعامل مع الجائحة الفيروسية.
وكان عدة خبراء قد حذروا من حدوث زيادة كبيرة في عدد وفيات كورونا في فصل الشتاء.. وما فاقم من الوضع ظهور سلالات جديدة يخشى أن تقاوم اللقاحات المستخدمة في التصدي للوباء.
