Recent study: Immune cells “remember” Covid-19 for at least half a year

Doha: A U.S. study has added new evidence on the period of immunity that results from coronavirus infection. Previous research has caused concern by showing that equivalent antibodies can decline rapidly after Coronavirus infection, but recent studies have highlighted the role of other parts of the immune system in achieving long-term immunity, namely B memory cells.
According to a research paper published in the journal Science this month, nearly all major parts of the immune system that can learn to identify and repel new pathogens can continue to respond to the virus for at least 8 months, including protein B memory cells, which researchers found actually increased in the blood 6 months after infection, and based on blood samples analysis of 188 patients with the Covid-19 virus.
The study, published Monday, in the journal Nature, added new evidence, in which researchers argued that people may be able to fight the infection again for at least 6 months after recovering from The Covid-19 disease, thanks to the cells that can remember it.
The researchers, led by a team from Rockefeller University in America, studied dozens of people who recovered from Covid-19 and found that antibodies had faded from their bodies over time, but maintained levels of specific B memory cells.
These cells can remember the pathogen and, if they encounter infection again, can stimulate the immune system to reproduce antibodies that are resistant to the virus.
The study concluded that “memory responses are responsible for protecting against infection again and are necessary for effective vaccination”.
During the study, the researchers evaluated 87 people who recovered from Covid-19 just over one month and six months after the infection.
While they found that the activity of antibodies equivalent to the virus decreased over time, the number of B memory cells remained unchanged.
The researchers say that their study indicated that the response of B memory cells against CORONA virus develops in the six months following infection in the presence of viral residue proteins in the body, enabling cells to produce more effective antibodies.
Dr. Khaled Abdel Wahab, professor of virology at The South Valley University in Egypt, describes the study’s findings as very important.

الدوحة: أضافت دراسة أميركية دليلاً جديداً بشأن مدة المناعة التي تمنحها الإصابة بفيروس «كورونا المستجد». وتسببت الأبحاث السابقة في القلق من خلال إظهار أن الأجسام المضادة المعادلة يمكن أن تنخفض بسرعة بعد الإصابة بالفيروس، لكن الدراسات الحديثة سلّطت الضوء على دور أجزاء أخرى من جهاز المناعة في تحقيق المناعة طويلة المدى، وهي خلايا الذاكرة البائية.
ونصت إحدى الأوراق البحثية التي نُشرت في مجلة (ساينس) هذا الشهر أن جميع الأجزاء الرئيسية تقريباً من الجهاز المناعي التي يمكنها تعلم التعرف على مسببات الأمراض الجديدة وصدها يمكن أن تستمر في الاستجابة للفيروس لمدة 8 أشهر على الأقل، وشمل ذلك خلايا الذاكرة البائية الخاصة بالبروتين، والتي وجد الباحثون أنها زادت بالفعل في الدم بعد 6 أشهر من الإصابة، واستندت الورقة إلى تحليل عينات دم من 188 مريضاً بفيروس «كوفيد – 19».
وأضافت الدراسة التي نُشرت أول من أمس، في دورية «نيتشر»، دليلاً جديداً، حيث ذهب الباحثون خلالها إلى أن الناس قد يكونون قادرين على محاربة العدوى مرة أخرى لمدة 6 أشهر على الأقل بعد تعافيهم من مرض «كوفيد – 19»، بفضل الخلايا التي يمكنها تذكره.
ودرس الباحثون الذي تَزعّمهم فريق من جامعة «روكفلر» بأميركا، عشرات الأشخاص الذين تعافوا من «كوفيد – 19»، ووجدوا أن الأجسام المضادة تلاشت من أجسامهم بمرور الوقت، إلا أنهم حافظوا على مستويات من خلايا الذاكرة البائية المحددة.
ويمكن لهذه الخلايا أن تتذكر العامل الممرِض ويمكنها، إذا واجهت العدوى مرة أخرى، أن تحفّز جهاز المناعة على إعادة إنتاج الأجسام المضادة المقاومة للفيروس.
وخلصت الدراسة إلى أن «استجابات الذاكرة مسؤولة عن الحماية من الإصابة مرة أخرى وهي ضرورية للتطعيم الفعال».
وخلال الدراسة قام الباحثون بتقييم 87 شخصاً تعافوا من «كوفيد – 19» بعد فترة تزيد قليلاً على شهر و6 أشهر بعد الإصابة.
وفي حين وجدوا أن نشاط الأجسام المضادة المعادلة للفيروس انخفض مع مرور الوقت، ظل عدد خلايا الذاكرة البائية دون تغيير.
يقول الباحثون إن دراستهم أشارت إلى أن استجابة خلايا الذاكرة البائية ضد فيروس «كورونا» تتطور خلال الأشهر الستة التالية للعدوى في وجود بروتينات بقايا فيروسية في الجسم، مما يمكّن الخلايا من إنتاج أجسام مضادة أكثر فاعلية.
من جانبه، يصف الدكتور خالد عبد الوهاب، أستاذ الفيروسات بجامعة جنوب الوادي المصرية، النتيجة التي توصلت إليها الدراسة بأنها في غاية الأهمية.
