QRCS Supports Water Projects in Yemen

Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) announced Sunday that it recently launched a new project to dig wells and rehabilitate water projects in Yemen. About 120,000 people will benefit from it in five governorates Taiz, Al-Dhalea, Saada, Hajjah, and Rayma, with a total cost of USD 1097870.

In a statement, QRCS said that this project came to expand access to clean drinking water and to meet the needs of the most vulnerable communities in Yemen as well as providing more support to service institutions so that it can provide the minimum services and avoid the collapse due to weak capabilities and resources available.

During the inauguration ceremony of the project in Taiz Governorate, representative of the committee in Dabaa al-Dakhil of Al-Shamayatayn district Mamoun Abdul Karim Muhammad, said: “We thank the Qatari Red Crescent for its intervention and its response to the humanitarian need of the people in Dabaa Al-Dakhil. We rehabilitate Well (Al-Lus) with the support of our people in Qatar, and about 1,000 people will benefit from it. It is decided that the well will be deepened and maintained and linked to a local water distribution network, to alleviate the suffering of the people, especially with the scarcity of water in the winter season”.

The project manager Eng. Yunus Al Ariqi said that the project will carry out drilling and rehabilitation works for 53 manual wells, in addition to installing solar-powered pumps, building and rehabilitating 15 water tanks with a capacity of 50 cubic meters, and rehabilitating 73 wells. The required needs will be provided as a contribution from the Qatar Red Crescent.

The depth of the hand wells in the Yemeni countryside is between 25 and 30 meters, some of them are drinkable and others have salty water, as in the coastal areas.

Water projects in rural areas have been suspended due to the increase in the number of displaced people fleeing the conflict areas to the countryside, the successive failures of the pumps of artesian wells, the worn-out and damaged pipes, the weakness of water in the wells, and the high prices of petroleum products in light of the economic crisis.

According to the UN annual needs document 2019, more than half of Yemen’s districts are in urgent need of support in the field of sanitation, and more than 55 percent of the population in 197 districts cannot access any source of improved water.

With limited access to safe drinking water, local communities are resorting to unsafe water sources, only 24 percent of families treat water at home. The response continues to focus on supporting the infrastructure and rehabilitating the existing water and sanitation networks, to prevent the spread of epidemic diseases such as cholera, diphtheria, dengue fever, and scabies.

It is worth mentioning that QRCS has previously completed a similar project for digging hand wells and rehabilitating water projects, a total of 34 manual wells in 8 directorates in Taiz and Al-Hodeidah governorates. The project cost USD 400 thousand funded by the donations of the philanthropists of Qatar, and benefits about 35 thousand people.

الدوحة: أعلن الهلال الأحمر القطري، يوم الأمس، أنه أطلق مؤخرا مشروعا جديدا لحفر الآبار وتأهيل مشاريع المياه في اليمن، سيستفيد منه 120 ألف شخص في 5 محافظات، هي تعز والضالع وصعدة وحجة وريمة، بتكلفة إجمالية قدرها 1097870 دولارا أمريكيا.

وقال الهلال الأحمر القطري، في بيان له، إن هذا المشروع جاء لتوسيع رقعة الحصول على مياه الشرب النظيفة، وتلبية احتياجات المجتمعات الأشد ضعفا في اليمن، وتقديم المزيد من الدعم للمؤسسات الخدمية حتى تتمكن من توفير الحد الأدنى من الخدمات، وتفادي انهيارها بسبب ضعف الإمكانات والموارد المتاحة.

وخلال مراسم تدشين المشروع في محافظة /تعز/، قال مأمون عبد الكريم محمد، ممثل اللجنة المجتمعية في عزلة /دبع الداخل/ التابعة لمديرية /الشمايتين/: “نشكر الهلال الأحمر القطري على تدخله واستجابته للحاجة الإنسانية الضرورية للأهالي في ريف /دبع الداخل/. نحن نشرع اليوم في إعادة تأهيل بئر /اللوص/ بدعم من أهلنا في قطر، وسوف يستفيد منها حوالي 1,000 نسمة. ومن المقرر أن يتم تعميق البئر وصيانتها وربطها بشبكة توزيع مياه محلية، للتخفيف من معاناة الأهالي وخصوصا مع قلة المياه في فصل الشتاء”.

فيما قال مدير المشروع المهندس يونس العريقي: “سينفذ المشروع أعمال حفر وتأهيل 53 بئرا يدوية، إلى جانب تركيب مضخات تعمل بالطاقة الشمسية، وبناء وتأهيل 15 خزان مياه بسعة 50 مترا مكعبا، وتأهيل 73 بئرا مع توفير النواقص والاحتياجات المطلوبة، إسهاما من الهلال الأحمر القطري في توفير شربة الماء النقية للمواطن اليمني، وتقليل عناء الحصول عليها وخاصة للنساء والأطفال”.

ويبلغ عمق الآبار اليدوية في الريف اليمني ما بين 25 و 30 مترا، بعضها صالح للشرب والبعض الآخر مياهه مالحة كما في المناطق الساحلية.

ونظرا لتزايد أعداد النازحين الهاربين من مناطق الصراع إلى الأرياف، وتوالي أعطال مضخات الآبار الارتوازية، وتهالك المواسير وتلفها، وضعف المياه في الآبار، وارتفاع أسعار المشتقات البترولية في ظل الأزمة الاقتصادية، فقد أدى كل ذلك إلى توقف مشاريع المياه في المناطق الريفية، لتتفاقم معاناة الناس يوميا للحصول على المياه الضرورية لحياتهم.

وبحسب وثيقة الاحتياجات السنوية الصادرة من الأمم المتحدة لعام 2019، فإن أكثر من نصف مديريات اليمن بحاجة ماسة إلى الدعم في مجال الصرف الصحي، ولا يستطيع أكثر من 55 بالمئة من السكان في 197 مديرية الوصول إلى أي مصدر للمياه المحسنة.

وفي ظل محدودية الوصول إلى المياه الصالحة للشرب، تلجأ المجتمعات المحلية إلى مصادر المياه غير الآمنة، وتقوم فقط 24% من الأسر بمعالجة المياه في المنزل. ولا تزال الاستجابة تركز على دعم البنية الأساسية وتأهيل شبكات المياه والصرف الصحي القائمة، لمنع انتشار الأمراض الوبائية مثل الكوليرا والدفتيريا وحمى الضنك والجرب.

جدير بالذكر أن الهلال الأحمر القطري سبق له إكمال مشروع مماثل لحفر الآبار اليدوية وتأهيل مشاريع المياه، بإجمالي 34 بئرا يدوية في 8 مديريات بمحافظتي تعز والحديدة. وقد كلف المشروع 400 ألف دولار أمريكي ممولة من حصيلة تبرعات أصحاب الأيادي البيضاء من أهل قطر، ويستفيد منه حوالي 35 ألف نسمة.
