Doha: Archaeologists say the new revelation, announced yesterday by Qatar Museums in the Al-Assila cemetery (12 qm east of Um Bab), will reveal much about the nature of life in the Pre-C and Beyond in the Arabian Peninsula.

According to Museums, the antiquities management team was able to discover the remains of important figures buried in large tombs carefully built at the top of a hill, and some of their own belongings, such as a sword, some metal tools and gold earrings, were buried in one of the tombs, dating from 300 BC to 300 AD.

The team also found the skeletons of a female camel with her baby buried as a sacrifice in a stone room connected to a human tomb.

The graves findings revealed the burial of an untouched female camel in a natural comfort situation with her legs folded under her body, indicating that the camel was taken to the burial pit, blessed by those who took her, and then slaughtered her with her little one.

This stunning discovery will provide new information about camel breeding and their uses, as well as on pre-Islamic rituals in the Arabian Peninsula.

A similar cemetery was uncovered in Al-Mazroaa 1961 and contained the remains of hybrid camels of jindal and katar.

Human remains are subject to advanced anthropological and molecular analyses, including the study of ancient genetic materials, but careful analyses of the effects discovered are expected to reveal migratory patterns and the dietary habits of people who lived in this region in ancient times.

Faisal al-Nuaimi, Director of Antiquities At Qatar Museums, said: “Our work at al-Assila site is part of a systematic plan that has been going on for years to uncover thousands of graves across Qatar with the aim of creating a general perception of the nature of the lives of the people who settled in this area in ancient times.”

“The Antiquities we have discovered, after careful and sophisticated analysis, will contribute to achieving this goal, which is in line with our larger purpose of preserving, discovering, documenting and linking Qatari heritage to our present,” al-Nuaimi said.

Al-Assila Cemeteries is one of the many burial sites that Qatar Museums is seeking to explore as part of the National Priorities for Scientific Research program “The Human Population and Demographics of Qatar from the Neolithic To the Late Iron Age”, led by Sidra Medicine, and funded by the Qatar Fund for Scientific Research.
