Good news: Pfizer study on the efficacy of the vaccine against new Coronavirus strains

Doha: According to a laboratory study conducted by the American company Pfizer, the vaccine it developed with the company BioNTech to prevent Covid-19 disease appears to be effective in facing a fundamental mutation in new rapidly spreading strains of Coronavirus that have been detected in Britain and South Africa.

The study, which was conducted by Pfizer and scientists from the University of Texas Medical Branch and has not yet been reviewed, indicates that the vaccine is effective in neutralizing the virus, according to Reuters.

Philip Dormitzer, a senior viral vaccine scientist at Pfizer, said the mutation could be the reason for the increased spread ability and that there was concern that it might cause the virus to escape neutralization of the vaccine-stimulated antibodies.

The study was conducted on blood samples taken from people who received the vaccine. Their results are limited, because they do not consider the full set of mutations detected in new strains of the rapidly spreading virus.

Dormitzer said that it is encouraging that the vaccine appears to be effective against the mutation, in addition to 15 other mutations that the company has already tested the vaccine with, adding: “We have now tested 16 different mutations, and none of them had a significant effect. This is the good news. This does not mean the seventeenth (mutation) will have no effect. “

The researchers plan to conduct similar tests to see if the vaccine is effective, along with other mutations detected in the new strains that have appeared in Britain and South Africa, and they hope to have more data within weeks.

A Reuters statistic showed that more than 87.42 million people were infected with Coronavirus worldwide, while the total number of deaths resulting from the virus reached one million and 888.982 deaths. And infections have been recorded in more than 210 countries and regions since the first cases were discovered in China in December 2019.

وقال فيل دورميتسر، أحد كبار علماء اللقاحات الفيروسية في شركة فايزر، إن التحور قد يكون السبب في زيادة قابلية الانتشار وإنه كان هناك قلق من أنه قد يجعل الفيروس يفلت من تحييد الأجسام المضادة التي يحفزها اللقاح.

وأجريت الدراسة على عينات دم مأخوذة من أشخاص تلقوا اللقاح. ونتائجها محدودة ، لأنها لا تنظر في المجموعة الكاملة من التحورات التي رصدت في السلالات الجديدة للفيروس سريع الانتشار.
