The Queen and other members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, Prince Charles and Camilla, dust of their fanciest frocks and sparkliest tiaras for State Banquets – but staff have the job of making sure they are all safe
The Royal Family’s state banquets are huge occasions and the hosts and their staff spend months planning every tiny detail.
The guestlist, menu, decoration and speeches are carefully considered to make sure everything is perfect.
Unsurprisingly for events attended by some of the most powerful people in th world, including presidents, prime minsters and royalty, security is also a huge logistical challenge.
Over the years staff have come up with a number of little tricks to ensure our Queen is kept safe during the dinners – including one for ensuring nobody can poison her by slipping something into her food in the kitchen.
In Channel 5’s Secrets of the Royal Kitchens, royal correspondent Emily Andrews revealed: “After everything is plated up, a page chooses at random one of the plates to be served to Her Majesty.
“So if anyone did want to poison the monarch they’d have to poison the whole lot.”
But the Queen’s evening routine is very, very different when she’s not entertaining important figures from around the world.
During the programme, Royal biographer Lady Colin Campbell explained that the Monarch’s day-to-day tastes are much more modest.
The Queen has her pick of lavish dining rooms but instead she chooses to eat her evening meal in the comfort of her own living room.
And like many of her subjects, the monarch enjoys nothing more than a TV dinner.
Lady Campbell explained: “She has her dinner off a tray looking at the television.
“She likes it. It’s homely and cosy and it’s comfortable.”
She has a team of chefs who come up with menu choices for her every few days, which are then presented for the Queen for her to pick she.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady said: “The chef does three days’ menus and that gives us enough time to get all the produce in and prepare it.
“When the menu book goes up to the Queen she puts a line through all the dishes she doesn’t want.”
Before she sits down to her evening meal, the Queen enjoys her favourite tipple of gin and dubonnet at 7pm prompt.
While the Queen may not cook her own meals she keeps a careful eye on what’s being served in the royal household.
Former royal chef Darren McCrady explained: “All food is overseen by the Queen. The chef prepares three days of menus, which will give us enough time to get all the produce, and these are given to Her Majesty.”

وعلى مر السنوات، توصل طاقم العمل إلى عدد من الحيل الصغيرة، لضمان أن تظل الملكة في أمان خلال ولائم العشاء؛ منها خدعة تضمن ألا يضع أحدٌ السم في طعامها بالمطبخ، وفقاً لما ذكرته صحيفة “ديلي ميرور” البريطانية، وفي برنامج القناة الخامسة المعروف بـSecrets of the Royal Kitchens (أسرار المطبخ الملكي)، كشفت المراسلة الملكية إيميلي أندروز عن أحد الأسرار، قائلة: «بعد أن يوضع الطعام في الأطباق، يختار واحد من الخدم عشوائياً أي الأطباق يُقدَّم إلى جلالتها».
وأضافت: «وهكذا إذا أراد أحد أن يُسمم الملكة، فسيكون عليه أن يُسمم الجَمع بأكمله». لكن روتين الملكة المسائي يكون مختلفاً كل الاختلاف في الأوقات التي لا تستضيف فيها شخصيات مهمة من حول العالم.وخلال البرنامج، أوضحت كاتبة السير الذاتية الملكية، ليدي كولين كامبل، أن أذواق الملكة اليومية أكثر تواضعاً للغاية، حيث تملك الملكة أن تختار من بين غرف الطعام المترفة، لكنها بدلاً من ذلك تتناول وجبتها في غرفة معيشتها الخاصة المريحة.
ومثل كثير من رعاياها، لا تستمتع الملكة بشيء أكثر من مشاهدة التلفاز في أثناء العشاء، وبحسب ليدي كامبل «تتناول الملكة العشاء في صينية وهي تنظر إلى التلفاز»، وتضيف «هي تحب ذلك. فهو أمر حميمي ودافئ ومريح». وأضافت ان الملكة تملك فريقاً من الطهاة يضعون قائمة من اختيارات الطعام كل بضعة أيام، وتُقدَّم لها هذه القائمة بعد ذلك لتختار منها.
ويقول الطاهي الملكي السابق، دارين مكغريدي: «يضع الطاهي قائمة طعام لثلاثة أيام تالية، ويمنحنا ذلك وقتاً كافياً للحصول على المنتجات وتحضيرها»، ويضيف: «عندما تذهب القائمة إلى الملكة، تضع خطاً على الأطباق التي تريدها». وقبل أن تجلس الملكة لتناول وجبة العشاء، تستمتع باحتساء شراب الجين والديبونيه المفضَّلَين لديها، في السابعة مساءً.وفي حين قد لا تطهو الملكة طعامها الخاص، تراقب بحرص ما يُقدَّم في البلاط الملكي. إذ يقول مكغريدي: «تراقب الملكة الطعام كله. يُحضر الطاهي قائمة تكفي ثلاثة أيام، وهو ما يعطينا وقتاً كافياً لتحضيره، وتُعطى هذه القائمة للملكة».
