QRCS Inaugurates Project to Help Hydrocephalus Patients in Yemen

Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) inaugurated Monday a project to help the patients with hydrocephalus in Yemen. Around 1,000 children in all governorates of Yemen will benefit from the project.

Under the project, both external ventricular drains (EVDs) and intraventricular catheters (IVCs) will be provided, as well as the pre-, during, and post-procedure medications. It also involves payment for the costs of transportation and accommodation for the poor families that cannot afford the travel to Amanat Al-Asimah.

These activities will cost $309,000, totally paid by QRCS, while the Handicap Care and Rehabilitation Fund will pay for the costs of procedures.

In his speech on this occasion, the project’s manager at QRCS’s representation mission Mohamed Al Shumairi states that 100 CSF machines have already been procured and delivered by QRCS, out of 1,000 machines. “As we completed Phase 1 of the free-of-charge treatment campaign, we were contacted by many families. Over the early days, 23 children were operated on their brains. Every family received $200 in cash. So far, the project paid for the transportation and accommodation of 14 poor families from remote areas,” he added.

In turn, Deputy Manager of the Handicap Care and Rehabilitation Fund (implementing partner), staff of the fund Othman Al Salawi, hailed the role played by QRCS through this humanitarian and life-saving project that alleviates the suffering of children with hydrocephalus in Yemen, amid absolute absence of international organizations.

It is worth noting that hydrocephalus disease is an increase in the amount of cerebral fluid as a result of high production, lack of absorption, or blockage of the fluid course, and infection with this disease causes many complications, including: brain atrophy, intellectual disability, enlargement of the head size in children, loss of vision, convulsions, nausea.

الدوحة: أعلن الهلال الأحمر القطري، يوم الأمس، تدشينه لمشروع دعم مرضى الاستسقاء الدماغي في اليمن، والذي يستفيد منه 1000 طفل في جميع المحافظات.

ويتضمن المشروع توفير أجهزة شفط السائل الدماغي سواء الداخلية أو الخارجية، وكذلك الأدوية المصاحبة قبل وأثناء وبعد العملية، بالإضافة إلى تغطية تكاليف المواصلات والمعيشة للأسر الفقيرة التي لا تستطيع الوصول إلى أمانة العاصمة لإجراء العمليات.

وتبلغ تكلفة هذه الأنشطة 309 آلاف دولار أمريكي ممولة من الهلال الأحمر القطري، بينما يتحمل صندوق رعاية وتأهيل المعاقين تكاليف العمليات.

وفي كلمة له بهذه المناسبة، قال السيد محمد الشميري مدير المشروع ببعثة الهلال الأحمر القطري، إن الهلال الأحمر قام بتوريد 100 جهاز لشفط السائل الدماغي كمرحلة أولى من 1000 جهاز.

وأضاف “بالتزامن مع انتهاء المرحلة الأولى من حملة العلاج المجاني، تواصل معنا عدد كبير من الأسر. ومع الأيام الأولى للتدشين، خضع 23 طفلا للتدخل الجراحي، كما قدمنا دعما ماليا يبلغ 200 دولار أمريكي لكل أسرة. وقد استفادت من المشروع حتى الآن 14 أسرة فقيرة تعيش في مناطق نائية بعيدة عن العاصمة”.

بدوره، ثمن السيد عثمان الصلوي نائب مدير صندوق رعاية وتأهيل المعاقين /الشريك التنفيذي/، الدور الذي يقدمه الهلال الأحمر القطري من خلال هذا المشروع الإنساني للتخفيف من معاناة الأطفال المصابين بالاستسقاء الدماغي في اليمن، مؤكدا أهمية هذا الدور المنقذ للحياة في ظل غياب دور المنظمات الدولية.

جدير بالذكر أن مرض الاستسقاء الدماغي هو زيادة في كمية السائل الدماغي نتيجة لارتفاع الإنتاج أو نقص في الامتصاص أو انسداد مجرى السائل، وتسبب الإصابة بهذا المرض مضاعفات جمة منها: ضمور الدماغ، إعاقة ذهنية، تضخم حجم الرأس لدى الأطفال، فقدان النظر، تشنجات، غثيان.
