Will 2021 be the year of vaccines and the recovery of air traffic?

Doha: With the start of the Coronavirus vaccination operations worldwide, the end of last year 2020 carried optimism about the economic recovery in the current year 2021 for several sectors that have been severely affected by the pandemic, especially the aviation sector.

The Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine occupied the best part in those international campaigns. With the entry of 2021, international announcements of promising vaccines, such as the Oxford vaccine, began, while other countries licensed the Russian and Chinese vaccines. 

Countries hope to vaccinate the majority of their population so that the pandemic will end completely by the spring of 2021, but do those in charge of the aviation sector feel the same optimism?

German Radio quoted the Secretary-General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Alexandre de Juniac as saying, “2021 will be a better year,” noting that this union expects “only” a loss of $ 39 billion. 

“I am sure that we will witness a clear growth during the next year,” He added. As Carsten Spohr, head of the German airline “Lufthansa”, also announced, stating that his company will be able next year, on average, to reach half the passenger level of 2019. 

“For the summer and autumn, we estimate a growth of up to 70 %.” says the head of the German company.

Business travel is estimated to decline continuously from ten to 20 % and the share of individual travel by the Lufthansa Group from today rises from 75 to 80 %. 

The aviation sector is betting strongly on the upcoming vaccinations, and Spohr proceeds that long-distance flights will only be possible for people who are confirmed to not carry the coronavirus or a vaccination certificate until the world’s population reaches adequate immunity.  

The Australian airline has announced since November that once a vaccine is in place, vaccination will be mandatory for intercontinental flights.

The International Air Transport Association has proposed implementing a passport in which test results and vaccination certificates are recorded for each passenger. 

According to CNN, airlines need to work on an average of 70% to equalize losses and profits.

In the next few months, says Graham Dunn, FlightGlobal’s executive editor, airlines plan “to travel wherever they can reach.”

But for traditional and low-cost carriers, this means different things, as traditional airlines focus on their large routes from hub airports, while low-cost airlines will fly wherever it is permitted.

Rather than sitting beautifully on a Dreamliner or A380, expect travel on a smaller plane, so the airline can achieve balance.

Airlines raised their prices for 2021 to compensate for the lack of demand, but if demand remains low, prices are expected to decrease, and analysts believe that countries will make attractive offers to bring airlines back to their airports.

الدوحة: مع بدء عمليات التطعيم بلقاحات كورونا على مستوى العالم، حملت نهايات العام الماضي2020 تفاؤلاً بشأن التعافي الاقتصادي في العام الحالي 2021 لعدة قطاعات تأثرت بشدة من الجائحة وعلى رأسها قطاع الطيران .

واحتل لقاح فايزر/بونتيك نصيب الأسد في تلك الحملات الدولية، ومع دخول عام 2021 بدأت الإعلانات الدولية عن لقاحات واعدة مثل لقاح أكسفورد، فيما رخصت دول أخرى للقاحين الروسي والصيني .. 

وتأمل الدول في تطعيم غالبية سكانها لتنتهي الجائحة تماماً بحلول ربيع 2021 .. لكن هل ينظر المسؤولون عن قطاع الطيران بنفس التفاؤل .

ونقلت الإذاعة الألمانية عن الأمين العام لاتحاد النقل الجوي الدولي ألكسندر دي جونياك قوله : “2021 ستكون سنة أفضل”، مشيراً إلى أن هذا الاتحاد يتوقع “فقط” خسارة بـ 39 مليار دولار. 

وأضاف: “أنا متأكد أننا سنشهد خلال العام المقبل نموا واضحا”، كما أعلن ذلك أيضا رئيس شركة “لوفتهانزا” الألمانية للطيران كارستن شبور، وهو ينطلق من أن شركته ستتمكن العام المقبل في المتوسط من بلوغ نصف مستوى الركاب من عام 2019. 

ويقول رئيس الشركة الألمانية “بالنسبة إلى الصيف والخريف نحسب نمواً حتى 70 في المائة”.

 ويقدر التراجع المتواصل لسفريات الأعمال من عشرة إلى 20 في المائة وحصة السفريات الفردية لدى مجموعة لوفتهانزا انطلاقا من اليوم ترتفع من 75 إلى 80 في المائة. 

ويراهن قطاع الطيران بقوة على عمليات التلقيح المقبلة، وينطلق شبور من أن الرحلات الطويلة المسافة ستكون ممكنة فقط للأشخاص الذين يتم الثبوت من عدم إصابتهم بكورونا أو شهادة تلقيح إلى أن يصل سكان العالم إلى مناعة كافية. 

وشركة الطيران الأسترالية أعلنت منذ نوفمبر أنه فور وجود لقاح ستدرج إلزامية التلقيح بالنسبة إلى الرحلات عبر القارات.

والاتحاد الدولي للنقل الجوي اقترح تطبيقا لجواز سفر تُخزن فيه نتائج الاختبارات وشهادة التلقيح لكل مسافر. 

وحسب موقع “سي إن إن” فإن شركات الطيران تحتاج إلى العمل في المتوسط بنسبة 70٪ لتحقق التعادل بين الخسائر والأرباح.

يقول جراهام دن، المحرر التنفيذي لشركة  FlightGlobal، إن شركات الطيران تخطط خلال الأشهر القليلة المقبلة “السفر إلى أي مكان يمكنها الوصول إليه”.

لكن بالنسبة لشركات النقل التقليدية ومنخفضة التكلفة، هذا يعني أشياء مختلفة، حيث تركز شركات الطيران التقليدية على خطوطها الكبيرة من المطارات المحورية، في حين أن شركات الطيران منخفضة التكلفة ستتجه رحلاتها أينما كان ذلك مسموحاً به.

وبدلاً من الجلوس بشكل جميل على طائرة دريملاينر أو A380، يتوقع أن يكون السفر على متن طائرة أصغر حجماً، حتى تتمكن شركة الطيران من تحقيق التعادل.

ورفعت شركات الطيران أسعارها لعام 2021 لتعويض نقص الطلب، ولكن إذا ظل الطلب منخفضاً، فيتوقع أن تقل الأسعار، ويرى محللون أن الدول ستقدم على  عروض جذابة لإعادة شركات الطيران مرة أخرى إلى مطاراتها .
