New vaccine gives rise to hope for the end of Coronavirus and 100% protection for acute cases

Doha: The CEO of the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca, confirmed on Sunday that the vaccine developed by his company in cooperation with the University of Oxford was able to achieve a “successful equation” with regard to effectiveness in combating Covid-19.

Pascal Soriot said in an interview with the “Sunday Times” newspaper that the “Oxford-AstraZeneca” vaccine, which is currently being evaluated by an independent British medical product regulator, provides “100% protection” against acute cases of Covid-19 that require hospitalization, according to AFP.

Initial trials had shown mixed results with regard to the AstraZeneca vaccine. At first the average rate of effectiveness was 70%, before it jumped to 90%, depending on the dose.

The UK drug manufacturer said that about 200 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be manufactured before the end of the year, and more than 700 million globally by the end of March next year.

And infections increased nationwide during the past week, especially in southeast Britain, and it is believed that it is because of a new mutation of the virus, more contagious, identified for the first time in the United Kingdom. According to a British study, the new mutated virus is 50-74% more contagious.

وقال باسكال سوريوت في مقابلة مع صحيفة “صنداي تايمز” إن لقاح “أكسفورد-استرازينيكا” الذي تقيّمه حالياً هيئة ناظمة بريطانية مستقلة للمنتجات الطبية، يؤمن “حماية بنسبة 100%” ضد الحالات الحادة من كوفيد-19 التي تتطلب دخول المستشفى، بحسب وكالة الأنباء الفرنسية.

وتعزز تصريحات سوريوت الأمل في نهاية وباء كورونا وعودة الحياة إلى طبيعتها بعد عام بلغت فيه أعداد الإصابات بالفيروس في العالم إلى أكثر من 79.9 مليون ووفاة مليون و753430​، بحسب إحصاء لرويترز، وفرض الإغلاقات ما أدى إلى خسائر اقتصادية واجتماعية ونفسية كبيرة.

“ضوء في نهاية النفق”

ومن المتوقع أن يحظى لقاح استرازينيكا بكل المواصفات المطلوبة للمصادقة عليه من قبل الهيئات البريطانية. وقد طلبت الحكومة البريطانية 100 مليون جرعة، ومن المقرر توفير 40 مليون جرعة بنهاية مارس.

ويأمل المسؤولون في المملكة المتحدة أن يتمكن اللقاح من وضح حد لتفشي الفيروس في بريطانيا التي تعد من الدول الأكثر تضررا مع تسجيلها نحو 70 ألف وفاة.

وقالت الشركة المصنعة للأدوية في المملكة المتحدة إن نحو 200 مليون جرعة من لقاح استرازينيكا سيتم تصنيعها قبل نهاية العام، وأكثر من 700 مليون على مستوى العالم بحلول نهاية مارس من العام المقبل.

وازدادت الاصابات على مستوى البلاد خلال الأسبوع الماضي، وخصوصاً في جنوب شرق بريطانيا، ويعتقد ان وراءها طفرة جديدة للفيروس أكثر عدوى وتم تحديدها لأول مرة في المملكة المتحدة. ووفقاً لدراسة بريطانية، فإن الفيروس المتحور الجديد معد بنسبة 50 إلى 74% أكثر.

وفي محاولة لاحتواء انتشار المرض، تم وضع الملايين في جميع أنحاء بريطانيا تحت قيود إغلاق أكثر صرامة دخلت حيز التنفيذ في 26 ديسمبر. كما فرضت عشرات الدول قيوداً على السفر الى المملكة المتحدة لوقف انتشار الطفرة الجديدة.

وأقر وزير المال ريتشي سوناك في مقالة في صحيفة “مايل أون صنداي” بأن هذا العام كان “عاما صعبا للجميع في هذا البلد”. ومع ذلك أضاف أن “التوزيع المبكر للقاحات والعمل الرائع لعلمائنا وخدمة الصحة الوطنية تعني أنه يمكننا الآن رؤية الضوء في نهاية النفق”.
