On January 24th, the couple decided to allocate all of their company’s resources, which have so far focused on immunotherapies for cancer, to develop an anonymous viral pneumonia treatment. The speed factor was central to the process, which was dubbed the “speed of light.”

“Since then… Not a day has passed without us working on this project.” Four days later, on January 28, Germany confirmed the first known case of human-to-human transmission on European soil. Less than two weeks later, the World Health Organization (WHO) first unveiled the name of the new epidemic: Covid-19.

· “Shot” glass.

Within walking distance of BioNTech, a Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs founded 130 years ago) has intensified their production.

Although unknown, the Shot glass specialist has been found to be a key player in the pharmaceutical industry thanks to his bottles used in millions of clinical research on the virus.

The glass it produces is now strongly required for its ability to withstand maximum temperatures of 80 degrees below zero to 500 degrees. This is a key feature as the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine should be stored at 70°C below zero. By the end of 2021, the Glass Shot plant plans to produce bottles for two billion doses of vaccine.

· Transporting medicines

At the Lufthansa cargo terminal at Frankfurt Airport, activity is accelerating and tensions are rising.

Europe’s largest drug transport centre, which took over 120,000 tons of medicines last year, is preparing to transfer millions of vaccine doses.

The center has an estimated 12,000 square meters of air-conditioned space for this type of product. The required temperatures are secured in special containers by blocks of dry ice, carbon dioxide in its solid form at temperatures of 78.9 below zero. Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, is not the only institution investing in refrigeration.

· Arctic Cold

In the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg, Bainder, an unknown small to medium-sized German company, has entered the scene with “super-cold refrigerators” with temperatures “cooler than the North Pole,” according to German media. Temperatures can therefore reach up to 90°C below zero.

Totlingen, one of the market’s leading companies, first supplied laboratories and then logistics and collaborated with The German authorities to equip vaccination centres.

“It all started in August when we received requests from logistics companies …and they stressed that we needed to equip our refrigerator-storing centers” Since then, demand has increased to the point where we are working around the clock, hiring and looking for more staff,” Ann Lenz, spokeswoman for the information office said.

On November 18, 10 months after the launch of its scientific adventure, BioNTech and its US partner Pfizer announced that its Covid -19 vaccine was 95% effective and safe. This is close to Modena, with which it is competing to develop the same technology to cope with the epidemic.

This step was followed by many nations around the world. Germany’s patience, hit by a second wave of Covid-19 cases, has begun to put pressure on the European Medicines Agency, the regulatory body, to make a decision on the vaccine, which was scheduled for December 29th at the latest.

On December 21st, the European Medicines Agency gave the green light for the vaccine, more than a week ahead of schedule. The European Union announced the start of the vaccination campaign on 27 of December.

At the Hamburg centre, the health authorities confirmed that they were ready, while BioNTech began online training with doctors and nurses. The company answers more than 1,000 questions from medical teams.

· A vaccine under police guard

The first vaccine-loaded trucks were launched from the Pfizer production plant in Belgium on Wednesday, with the trucks heading to the 25 distribution centers identified by German federal authorities, which will later transport them to the country’s 294 regions, BioNTech said.

“When we see how many people have died from this virus, we know how many lives the vaccine will save.” That’s what German Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

ومع بداية مرحلة جديدة في مهمة العالم لمكافحة وباء كورونا، ألقت وكالة الأنباء الفرنسية الضوء على عدد من أبطال “مغامرة إنقاذ البشرية” من بينهم أوغر شاهين المدير التنفيذي لشركة التكنولوجيا الحيوية الألمانية “بايونتيك” وزوجته أوزلام توريجي وهما في العقد الخامس من العمر وأبناء مهاجرين أتراك، إلا أن إنتاج لقاح “فايزر/ بيونتيك” لم يكن له أن يكتمل إلا بوجود آخرين لهم دورهم لكي يخرج من بين جدران المعامل إلى مختلف دول العالم.

واستعرضت وكالة الأنباء الفرنسية رحلة أوغر وزوجته ومعهما شركات أخرى، موضحة أن المشهد الأول في قصة “فايزر وبايونتيك”، بدأ عندما جلس الزوجان إلى المائدة صباح نهار شتوي لتناول الفطور في مطبخ منزلهما في ألمانيا واتفقا على أمر واحد: “ضرورة إطلاق” أبحاث لتطوير لقاح ضد “كوفيد 19”.

* الجائحة على الأبواب

وكان أوغر شاهين قرأ للتو مقالاً علمياً يصف التفشي الكبير لهذا الفيروس في مدينة ووهان. وتقول زوجته “استنتج من ذلك بأن هناك احتمالات كبيرة بأن تكون جائحة على الأبواب”.

وبدأت نقطة انطلاق مغامرة ستفضي إلى تطوير أول لقاح ضد كوفيد-19 يرخص في العالم الغربي. وهو إنجاز تم التوصل إليه خلال فترة زمنية قياسية.

وفي 24 يناير، قرر الزوجان تخصيص كافة موارد شركتهما التي كانت تتركز حتى الآن على العلاجات المناعية لمرض السرطان، لتطوير علاج للالتهاب الرئوي الفيروسي مجهول المصدر. وكان عامل السرعة أساسياً في هذه العملية التي اطلق عليها اسم “سرعة الضوء”.

وأكدت توريجي “منذ ذلك التاريخ (…) لم يمر يوم لم نعمل فيه على هذا المشروع”. وبعد 4 أيام في 28 يناير أكدت ألمانيا تسجيل أول حالة معروفة لانتقال العدوى بين البشر على الأراضي الأوروبية. وبعد أقل من اسبوعين كشفت منظمة الصحة العالمية لأول مرة اسم الوباء الجديد: كوفيد-19.

* زجاج “شوت”

على مسافة قريبة من بايونتيك، كثفت إحدى المؤسسات الصغيرة والمتوسطة التي تأسست قبل 130 سنة وتيرة انتاجها.

ورغم أنه غير معروف، تبين أن الأخصائي في زجاج “شوت” طرف أساسي في صناعة الأدوية بفضل زجاجاته المستخدمة بالملايين في الأبحاث السريرية حول الفيروس.

والزجاج الذي ينتجه وبات اختصاصه، مطلوب بقوة لقدرته على تحمل درجات الحرارة القصوى من 80 درجة تحت الصفر إلى 500 درجة. وهي ميزة ستكون أساسية إذ أنه يجب تخزين لقاح فايزر-بايونتيك في حرارة 70 درجة مئوية تحت الصفر. وبحلول نهاية 2021 ينوي مصنع زجاج شوت انتاج زجاجات تكفي لملياري جرعة لقاح.

* نقل الأدوية

وفي مركز الشحنات الدوائية التابع لخدمة “لوفتهانزا” للشحن في مطار فرانكفورت، يتسارع النشاط ويتصاعد التوتر.

ويستعد أكبر مركز أوروبي لنقل الأدوية الذي تولى نقل 120 ألف طن من الأدوية العام الماضي، لنقل الملايين من جرعات اللقاح.

ويملك المركز مساحة مكيفة تقدر بـ12 ألف متر مربع مخصصة لهذا النوع من المنتجات. ودرجات الحرارة المطلوبة تؤمن في حاويات خاصة بواسطة كتل من الثلج الجاف، ثاني اكسيد الكربون بشكله الصلب في درجات حرارة تبلغ 78,9 تحت الصفر. و”فرابورت” الشركة المشغلة لمطار فرانكفورت ليست المؤسسة الوحيدة التي تستثمر في مجال التبريد.

* برودة القطب الشمالي

وفي ولاية بادن-فورتمبيرغ (جنوب غرب) دخلت “بايندر” وهي شركة ألمانية غير معروفة صغيرة إلى متوسطة الحجم، على الساحة، بإنتاج “ثلاجات فائقة البرودة” تكون درجة الحرارة فيها “أكثر برودة من القطب الشمالي” بحسب الاعلام الألماني. بالتالي يمكن لدرجات الحرارة ان تصل حتى 90 درجة مئوية تحت الصفر.

وقامت مؤسسة “توتلينغن” التي تعد من الشركات الرائدة في السوق، أولاً بتزويد المختبرات ثم الوسائل اللوجستية وباتت تتعاون مع السلطات الألمانية لتجهيز مراكز التلقيح.

وأعلنت آن لينز المكلفة المكتب الاعلامي “كل شيء بدأ في أغسطس عندما تلقينا طلبات من شركات الخدمات اللوجستية (…) وأكدت أن علينا تجهيز مراكزنا المخصصة للتخزين بثلاجات”، مضيفة “مذاك ازداد الطلب لدرجة أصبحنا نعمل على مدار الساعة ونوظف ونبحث عن مزيد من الموظفين”.

وفي 18 نوفمبر بعد 10 أشهر على اطلاق مغامرتها العلمية، أعلنت بايونتيك مع شريكها الأمريكي فايزر ان لقاحها ضد كوفيد-19 فعال وآمن بنسبة 95%. وهي نسبة قريبة من شركة “موديرنا” التي تتنافس معها لتطوير التقنية نفسها لمواجهة الوباء.

وعلى وقع هذه الأنباء تحسنت البورصات العالمية، واستعاد العالم أجمع الأمل. وفي الثاني من ديسمبر، كانت بريطانيا أول بلد غربي يجيز بشكل طارىء استخدام لقاح فايزر-بايونتيك.

وتلتها في هذه الخطوة دول كثيرة في مختلف العالم. في حين بدأ صبر ألمانيا التي ضربتها بقوة موجة ثانية من حالات كوفيد-19، ينفذ لتمارس ضغوطاً على الوكالة الأوروبية للأدوية، الهيئة الناظمة، لتتخذ قراراً بشأن اللقاح والذي كان مقرراً في 29 ديسمبر على أبعد تقدير.

وفي 21 من ديسمبر الجاري أعطت الوكالة الأوروبية للأدوية الضوء الأخضر للقاح، قبل أكثر من أسبوع من الموعد المحدد. واعلن الاتحاد الأوروبي بدء حملة التلقيح في 27 منه.

وفي مركز هامبورغ أكدت السلطات الصحية أنها مستعدة في حين بدأت بايونتيك عمليات تدريب على الانترنت مع أطباء وممرضات. وتجيب الشركة على أكثر من ألف سؤال من الفرق الطبية.

* لقاح تحت حراسة الشرطة

وانطلقت أولى الشاحنات المحملة بجرعات اللقاح من مصنع فايزر للإنتاج في بلجيكا الأربعاء، حيث تتجه الشاحنات إلى مراكز التوزيع الـ25 التي حددتها السلطات الفدرالية الألمانية التي ستنقلها لاحقاً إلى مناطق البلاد الـ294 بحسب بايونتيك.

“عندما نرى عدد الأشخاص الذين توفوا جراء هذا الفيروس ندرك حينها عدد الأوراح التي سينقذها اللقاح”.. هكذا تقول المستشارة الألمانية أنغيلا ميركل.
