WHO renews warnings of ‘upcoming epidemic’

Geneva: WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus today warned that the Coronavirus pandemic will not be the world’s last epidemic crisis, stressing that attempts to improve human health are “doomed to failure without dealing with climate change and animal affairs.”
In a video posted on the international organization’s Twitter account on the occasion of World Epidemic Preparedness Day, Ghebreyesus denounced “the dangerous short-sightedness inherent in the use of money in outbreaks without taking any action in preparation for the next pandemic.” Adding that: “the time has come to learn from the Coronavirus “Covid-19” pandemic”.
“For a very long time, the world has worked in a circle of panic and cynicism,” he said, adding that “we are pouring money in the event of an outbreak, and when it is over, we forget about it and do nothing to prevent the next outbreak.” This is a dangerous short-sightedness, and frankly it is difficult to understand.”
“History tells us that this will not be the last pandemic, and that epidemics are a fact of life,” he said, adding that “the pandemic has highlighted the strong links between human and animal health and the planet.”
A September 2019 report on global preparedness for a health emergency indicated that the planet is not ready to deal with potentially devastating epidemics.
At a special session of the United Nations General Assembly on The Corona virus in early December, Mr. Tedros Ghebreyesus said that with a coronavirus vaccine on the horizon, countries should begin “preparing for the next epidemic,” stressing that “despite years of warnings, many countries were simply not ready for Covid-19, and many have erred on the assumption that their strong health systems will protect them.”

وأوضح أنه “لفترة طويلة جدا، عمل العالم في دائرة من الهلع والاستخفاف”، مضيفا “نحن نغدق الأموال في حالة حدوث تفشي، وعندما ينتهي ننسى أمره ولا نفعل شيئا لمنع التفشي القادم.. هذا قصر خطير بالنظر، وبصراحة يصعب فهمه”.
كما لفت المدير العام لمنظمة الصحة العالمية إلى أن “التاريخ يخبرنا أن هذه لن تكون الجائحة الأخيرة، وأن الأوبئة حقيقة من حقائق الحياة”، معتبرا أن “الجائحة سلطت الضوء على الروابط القوية ما بين صحة البشر والحيوانات والكوكب”.
وكان تقرير صادر في سبتمبر 2019 بشأن الاستعداد العالمي لحالة الطوارئ الصحية، قد لفت إلى أن الكوكب غير مستعد على الإطلاق للتعامل مع أوبئة مدمرة محتملة.
