3 scientists face bullying and death threats because of drug used to treat Coronavirus

Doha: Women scientists who had previously taken the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19 confirmed that they and their female colleagues were exposed to the tragedy of cyberbullying and death threats.

“Women may be more vulnerable than men to cyberbullying, which aims to degrade their scientific competence,” the scientists said in a letter published in The Lancet on Wednesday, signed by Swiss pharmacologist Caroline S’aimer and infectious diseases specialists Swiss Alexandra Calmy and French Karen Lacombe.

The scientists also referred to scientific articles talking about “receiving death threats and online harassment in Brazil, France and Switzerland after the publication of studies on the lack of proven effectiveness” of the drug hydroxychloroquine in relation to Covid-19.

“We fully support our female colleagues and are concerned about what they report, because we were also victims of (…) threats of all kinds and to varying degrees, including violent defamation expressions, persecution and attacks stemming from misogyny and discrimination,” the scholars emphasized in the message.

The scientists demanded that “the scientific community must reject all threats to researchers and clinicians clearly and unanimously.” In the letter, they also added that “these attacks were exclusively linked to our public participation in the media in which we tried to explain in a rational way the current situation about what we know about the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine and the safety of its use in the treatment and prevention of Covid-19.

It is noteworthy that the drug is the subject of great controversy, especially in France, where Professor Didier Raoul defended it, and it has been used for a long time to treat malaria, arthritis and skin diseases, and in June, a British-led evaluation team concluded that there is no evidence that hydroxychloroquine has reduced the death rate from the Coronavirus which is confirmed by WHO.

الدوحة: أكدت نساء عالمات تناولن في وقت سابق، عقار هيدروكسي كلوروكين المضاد للملاريا في علاج كوفيد-19، تعرضهن مع زميلات لهن لمأسأة من تنمر الإلكتروني وتهديدات بالقتل.

ووفقا لوكالة فرانس برس فقد قالت العالمات في رسالة نشرتها مجلة “ذا لانسيت” الأربعاء، وحملت الرسالة توقيع الخبيرة السويسرية في علم العقاقير كارولين سايمر والاخصائيتين في الأمراض المعدية السويسرية ألكسندرا كالمي والفرنسية كارين لاكومب “قد تكون النساء أكثر عرضة من الرجال للتنمر الالكتروني الذي يهدف الى الحط من قدرها ومن كفاءتها العلمية”.

كما أشارت العالمات إلى مقالات علمية تتحدث عن “تلقي تهديدات بالقتل ومضايقات عبر الانترنت في البرازيل وفرنسا وسويسرا بعد نشر دراسات عن عدم ثبوت فعالية” عقار هيدروكسي كلوروكين في ما يتعلق بكوفيد-19.

وأكدت العالمات في الرسالة “نحن ندعم زميلاتنا بشكل كامل ونشعر بالقلق إزاء ما يبلغن عنه، لأننا كنا نحن ايضا ضحايا (…) تهديدات من جميع الأنواع وبدرجات متفاوتة، بينها تعابير تشهير عنيفة وملاحقة وهجمات ناجمة عن كره النساء والتمييز”.

وطالبت العالمات بأنه “يجب على المجتمع العلمي رفض جميع التهديدات الموجهة للباحثين والأطباء بشكل واضح وبالاجماع”.، كما أضفن في الرسالة أن “هذه الهجمات ارتبطت بشكل حصري بمشاركاتنا العامة في وسائل الإعلام التي حاولنا فيها الشرح بطريقة عقلانية الحالة الراهنة حول ما نعرفه عن فعالية هيدروكسي كلوروكين وسلامة استخدامه في علاج كوفيد-19 والوقاية منه”.

يشار إلى أن العقار موضوع جدل كبير خاصة في فرنسا حيث دافع عنه البروفسور ديدييه راوول، وهو يستخدم منذ فترة طويلة لعلاج الملاريا والتهابات المفاصل وأمراض جلدية،وفي يونيو توصل فريق تقييم بقيادة بريطانيا الى أن لا دلائل على خفض هيدروكسي كلوروكين لمعدل الوفيات الناجمة عن فيروس كورونا، وهو ما أكدت عليه منظمة الصحة العالمية.
