Pfizer requests license to vaccinate children against Covid in Europe

Pfizer and BioNTech have submitted a request to the European Drug Agency to approve the use of their Coronavirus vaccine to include children between the ages of 12 and 15, as this step could offer Europe’s younger populations, who are at lower risk of contracting the virus, access to the vaccine for the first time.

The two pharmaceutical companies said in a statement on Friday that their application to the European Drug Agency was based on an advanced study of more than 2,000 teenagers, which showed the effectiveness and safety of their vaccination, and that children will remain under medical supervision and monitoring for their long-term protection and safety for another two years, according to Deutsche Welle.

Pfizer and BioNTech had previously requested an emergency use license from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to include children aged 12 to 15.

The covid-19 vaccine produced by the two companies was the first to be approved by the European Medicines Agency last December, when it was licensed to be used with anyone aged 16 and over in all 27 EU countries.

In a study of 2,260 U.S. volunteers between the ages of 12 and 15, preliminary data showed no covid-19 cases among fully vaccinated adolescents compared to 18 of those given fake doses, Pfizer reported, according to Al-Hurra American Website.

The company said that children suffer from similar side effects for adolescents, and the main side effects are pain, fever, chills and fatigue, especially after the second dose, and the study will continue to track participants for two years for more information on long-term protection and safety.

وكانت فايزر وبيونتك قد طلبت سابقًا ترخيص استخدام الطوارئ من إدارة الغذاء والدواء الأمريكية ليشمل الأطفال من سن 12 إلى 15 عامًا.

كما كان لقاح كوفيد-19 الذي تنتجته الشركتان أول لقاح يحصل على موافقة الوكالة الأوروبية للأدوية في ديسمبر الماضي، عندما تمت ترخيص استخدامه مع أي شخص يبلغ من العمر ستة عشر عاما فأكثر، في كل دول الاتحاد الأوروبي البالغ عددها سبع وعشرون دولة.

وفي دراسة أجريت على 2260 متطوعا أميركيا تتراوح أعمارهم بين 12 و15 عاما، أظهرت البيانات الأولية عدم وجود حالات كوفيد-19 بين المراهقين الذين تم تطعيمهم بالكامل مقارنة بـ 18 من بين أولئك الذين تم إعطاؤهم جرعات وهمية، حسبما ذكرت شركة فايزر وفقا لموقع الحرة الأمريكية.

وقالت الشركة إن الأطفال يعانون من آثار جانبية مماثلة للشباب، و الآثار الجانبية الرئيسية هي الألم والحمى والقشعريرة والتعب، خاصة بعد الجرعة الثانية، وستستمر الدراسة في تتبع المشاركين لمدة عامين لمزيد من المعلومات حول الحماية والسلامة على المدى الطويل.
