US government agencies including Treasury dept hacked

Washington: Sources familiar with the United States revealed that a high-level hacking group backed by a foreign government stole information from the US Treasury and from an agency responsible for determining Internet and communications policy Sunday December 13. 2020.

“The United States government is aware of these reports and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and address any potential problems associated with this situation,” said John Oliot, a spokesman for the National Security Council. According to Reuters.

While one of the sources said that the breach was so serious that it prompted a meeting of the National Security Council at the White House on Saturday.

The Washington Post and other US media recently accused Russia of launching cyber attacks on US government institutions, including the Treasury Department.

For its part, the Russian Embassy in the United States said that the attempts of the American media to accuse Moscow of launching cyber attacks on US government agencies were unfounded.

“We have drawn attention to recent, unfounded attempts by the American media to accuse Russia of launching cyber piracy attacks on US government devices,” the embassy said in a statement on its Facebook page.

“We declare that the attacks in the information space are inconsistent with the principles of our country’s foreign policy, its national interests, and the concept of building relationships between countries,” it added in the statement.

Washington has often accused Moscow of launching cyber attacks targeting US interests and agencies, including interfering with the 2016 presidential race that resulted in the victory of “Donald Trump”.

فيما قال أحد المصادر إن الاختراق كان خطيراً لدرجة دفعت لعقد اجتماع لمجلس الأمن القومي في البيت الأبيض السبت.

واتهمت صحيفة “واشنطن بوست” ووسائل إعلام أمريكية أخرى مؤخرا، روسيا بشن هجمات إلكترونية على مؤسسات حكومية أمريكية، منها وزارة الخزانة.

من جهتها قالت السفارة الروسية في الولايات المتحدة إن محاولات وسائل الإعلام الأمريكية اتهام موسكو بشن هجمات إلكترونية على هيئات حكومية أمريكية، لا أساس لها.

وذكرت السفارة في بيان على صفحتها في “فيسبوك”: “لقد لفتنا الانتباه إلى المحاولات الأخيرة، التي لا أساس لها من قبل وسائل الإعلام الأمريكية لاتهام روسيا بشن هجمات قرصنة إلكترونية على أجهزة الحكومة الأمريكية”.

وأضافت في البيان: “نعلن أن الهجمات في الفضاء المعلوماتي تتعارض مع مبادئ السياسة الخارجية لبلدنا ومصالحها الوطنية ولمفهوم بناء العلاقات بين الدول”.

وكثيرا ما اتهمت واشنطن موسكو بشن هجمات إلكترونية تستهدف مصالح وهيئات أمريكية، من بينها التدخل في سباق الرئاسة 2016 الذي أسفر عن فوز “دونالد ترامب”.
