70 thousand companies closed in Italy due to the Coronavirus

Rome: According to a survey of the Italian National Institute of Statistics, nearly 73,000 companies have closed in the country since the Coronavirus pandemic.

The institute stated, in a statement, that this number represents about 7% of the total one million companies surveyed between the end of October and the beginning of November.

About 55,000 businesses are expected to resume operations in the future, while 17,500 others – including 5,000 restaurants – have been closed for good. In addition to these companies, there are another 700,000 that are operating normally, and 244,000 are working partially.

According to the survey, 85% of closed businesses are small establishments employing less than nine people – and they typically include sports centers, boutique hotels, retail stores and pawnshops. The survey showed that more than two-thirds of businesses incurred losses on an annual basis from June to October, and 61.5% of companies expected to record more losses in December to February. About 42% of companies benefited from government plans to grant employees leave, compared to 70% in May, when Italy was under complete lockdown.
