London: The Times, a British newspaper, said yesterday that British scientists are monitoring about 4 thousand mutations of mutations of the Coronavirus, amid fears of the emergence of new strains, which have a greater ability to resist vaccines and treatments available so far.
And the newspaper indicates that the British government is investing millions of pounds to study different types of the virus, after scientists explained that anti-Coronavirus vaccines could cause a significant rise in virus mutations and the emergence of new strains at the same time.
Scientists also indicated that this is a natural reaction, as the Coronavirus attempts to resist extinction. Experts say some of the mutations trying to counteract the antibodies are already spreading across the country.
On her part, Professor Sharon Peacock, Director of the “Covid-19 Virus Genome Program in Britain ” (COG-UK), a body established to provide rapid genetic analysis of the virus’s path and its mutations, said that “intensified monitoring of virus mutations is indispensable.”
Peacock explained that by saying, «Because many of the vaccines that are being worked on target the same point in the virus, which are the proteinaceous spinal protrusions on its surface. “This protease, the spike protein, is a needle-like part of the virus that enables it to invade human cells.”
The world is waiting for a Coronavirus vaccine, amid fears of scientists about the emergence of new strains of the virus.
It is reported that Peacock’s team has carried out genetic sequencing of more than 100,000 samples of the Coronavirus, which is nearly half the number collected worldwide since the start of the epidemic.
Peacock said that the vast majority of these mutations are harmless, and even “few” of them are beneficial to humans. And most mutations have disappeared during the pandemic as quickly as they appeared. Peacock also said that the decisive measure in the matter is what scientists will seek to study samples from people who have received the vaccination, but who are still infected, to find out how the virus develops.

لندن: قالت صحيفة التايمز البريطانية، أمس إن العلماء البريطانيين يراقبون نحو 4 آلاف تحور من تحورات فيروس كورونا، وسط مخاوف من نشوء سلالات جديدة، تملك قدرة أكبر على مقاومة اللقاحات والعلاجات المتوفرة حتى الآن.
و تشير الصحيفة إلى أن الحكومة البريطانية تستثمر ملايين الجنيهات لدراسة أنواع مختلفة من الفيروس، بعد أن أوضح العلماء أن اللقاحات المضادة لفيروس كورونا يمكن أن تسبب في الوقت نفسه ارتفاعًا كبيرًا في طفرات الفيروس وظهور سلالات جديدة.
وأشار العلماء أيضًا إلى أن هذا يعد رد فعل طبيعيًا، إذ يحاول فيروس كورونا مقاومة الانقراض. ويقول خبراء إن بعض التحورات التي تحاول التصدي للأجسام المضادة تنتشر بالفعل في جميع أنحاء البلاد.
من جانبها، قالت البروفيسورة شارون بيكوك، مديرة برنامج «جينوم فيروس كوفيد 19 في بريطانيا» (COG-UK)، وهي هيئة أُنشئت لتقديم تحليل جيني سريع لمسار الفيروس وتحوراته، إنه «لا غنى عن تكثيف المراقبة لتحورات الفيروس».
وفسرت بيكون ذلك بقولها «لأن العديد من اللقاحات التي يجري العمل عليها تستهدف النقطة نفسها في الفيروس، وهي النتوءات الشوكية البروتينية على سطحه. وهذا البروز البروتيني، بروتين سبايك، هو جزء من الفيروس يشبه الإبرة ويمكّنه من غزو الخلايا البشرية».
وينتظر العالم لقاح فيروس كورونا وسط مخاوف من العلماء بظهور سلالات جديدة للفيروس.
و يُذكر أن فريق بيكوك اضطلع بتتبع التسلسل الجيني لأكثر من 100 ألف عينة من فيروس كورونا، وهو ما يقرب من نصف العدد الذي تم جمعه في جميع أنحاء العالم منذ بدء الوباء.
فيما قالت بيكوك إن الغالبية العظمى من تلك التحورات غير ضارة، حتى إن «قلة» منها مفيدة للبشر. كما أن معظم الطفرات اختفت خلال الجائحة بالسرعة نفسها التي ظهرت بها. وقالت بيكوك إن الإجراء الحاسم في الأمر هو ما سيسعى إليه العلماء من دراسة عينات من الأشخاص الذين تلقوا التطعيم، لكنهم ما زالوا مصابين، وذلك لمعرفة كيف يتطور الفيروس.
