New Technology to Restore Sight

Washington: Scientists have experimented with brain implants that allowed monkeys to see artificially created shapes with greater accuracy than previously available, in a scientific breakthrough that will help restore vision to blind people.

This technique was developed at the team’s initiative at the Netherlands Institute for Neurosciences (NIN) and its details have been published in Science magazine.

The concept adopted in it has been popular for decades, and that it is to stimulate the brain with electricity to induce it to “see” bright spots called “phosphine”, but technical limitations have prevented its application until now. The team developed an implant consisting of 1,024 electrodes that they attached to the visual cortex in the brain of two sighting monkeys to display different shapes on them. This part of the brain processes visual information and the visual cortex in humans is very similar to that of other primates.

وطوّرت هذه التقنية بمبادرة من فريق في المعهد الهولندي للعلوم العصبية (ان آي ان) ونشرت تفاصيلها في مجلّة «ساينس». والمفهوم المعتمد فيها شائع منذ عقود وهو يقضي بتحفيز الدماغ بالكهرباء لحثّه على «رؤية» نقاط لامعة تسمّى «فوسفين»، غير أن قيودًا تقنية حالت دون تطبيقه حتّى الساعة. وطوّر الفريق غرسة مؤلّفة من 1024 قطبًا كهربائيًا وصلوها بالقشرة البصرية في الدماغ عند قردين يبصران لعرض أشكال مختلفة عليهما. وهذا الجزء من الدماغ يعالج المعلومات البصرية والقشرة البصرية عند البشر شبيهة إلى حدّ بعيد بتلك عند الرئيسيات الأخرى.
