COVID is killing 120 people an hour in India

A month after the second wave of Covid-19 outbreaks began in India, the mortality rate continues to rise as the virus has claimed about 120 lives per hour in the past two weeks.

According to a CBS report, out of a total of 222,000 confirmed Coronavirus deaths in India, more than 57,000 cases have been recorded over the past month, which is about 80 deaths per hour. Over the past two weeks, about 120 deaths have been recorded every hour, according to Russia Today.

It also reported that dozens of U.S. Embassy staff in Delhi were among the latest confirmed cases, but an embassy spokesman told the network that “the health and safety of employees and their families is among the Highest Priorities of the State Department and that all necessary measures will be taken to protect the health and well-being of our staff, including providing vaccines”.

A severe shortage of coronavirus vaccines has hampered the Indian authorities’ plan to vaccinate all adults in the country, amid an accelerated pandemic in the country.

Over the weekend, more than 600 million Indians aged 18 to 45 were eligible for the vaccine as part of a government-adopted plan in the wake of last month’s deadly second wave, but as many experts predicted, vaccine shortages proved to be a major obstacle to achieving that goal, the Guardian said.

Of India’s 36 states and federal territories, only 12 have enough vaccines to start vaccinating over-18s in small quantities, and by Sunday, according to the Ministry of Health, 86,023 people between the ages of 18 and 45 had received the first dose of the vaccine, and the state that vaccinated the largest number of adults was Gujarat, the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Over the past 15 days, the daily vaccination rate has dropped from 3.2 million a day to 2.3 million a day, and it is estimated that if India wants to vaccinate everyone over the age of 18 this year, 7.5 million doses will be needed every day.

كما أفادت عن تقارير بأن العشرات من موظفي السفارة الأمريكية في دلهي كانوا من بين أحدث الإصابات المؤكدة، لكن متحدثا باسم السفارة قال للشبكة إن “صحة وسلامة الموظفين وعائلاتهم من بين أعلى أولويات وزارة الخارجية وأنه سيتم اتخاذ جميع التدابير اللازمة لحماية صحة ورفاهية موظفينا، بما في ذلك تقديم اللقاحات لهم”.

وفي نفس السياق أدى النقص الحاد في كمية اللقاحات المضادة لفيروس كورونا إلى إعاقة خطة السلطات الهندية الرامية إلى تطعيم جميع البالغين في البلاد، وذلك وسط تفشي الجائحة بشكل متسارع في البلاد.

صحيفة “الغارديان” البريطانية قالت إنه وخلال عطلة نهاية الأسبوع، أصبح أكثر من 600 مليون هندي من 18 إلى 45 عاما، مؤهلين للحصول على اللقاح ضمن خطة تبنتها الحكومة في أعقاب الموجة الثانية القاتلة التي ضربت البلاد الشهر الماضي، ولكن كما توقع الكثير من الخبراء فقد أثبت نقص اللقاحات أنه يمثل عائقا كبيرا أمام تحقيق ذلك الهدف.

وبحسب الصحيفة فإنه من أصل 36 ولاية وإقليم اتحادي في الهند، هناك فقط 12 ولاية لديها ما يكفي من اللقاحات للبدء في التطعيم من هم فوق 18 عاما وبكميات صغيرة،وبحلول يوم الأحد، وفقا لوزارة الصحة، تلقى 86023 شخصا تتراوح أعمارهم بين 18 و 45 عاما الجرعة الأولى من اللقاح، وكانت الولاية التي لقحت أكبر عدد من البالغين هي ولاية غوجارات، مسقط رأس رئيس الوزراء ناريندرا مودي.

وعلى مدار الخمسة عشر يوما الماضية، انخفض معدل التطعيمات اليومية من 3.2 مليون في اليوم إلى 2.3 مليون في اليوم، فيما تشير التقديرات إلى أنه في حال أرادت الهند تطعيم كل شخص يزيد عمره عن 18 عاما خلال هذا العام، فستكون هناك حاجة إلى 7.5 مليون جرعة كل يوم.

يشار إلى وزارة الصحة الهندية أعلنت أن العدد الإجمالي لحالات الإصابة بفيروس كورونا في البلاد تجاوز الـ 20 مليونا، بعد تسجيل أكثر من 357 ألف إصابة جديدة خلال الساعات الأربع والعشرين الماضية، في حين زادت الوفيات بـ 3449، ليصل مجموعها العام إلى 222408.
