5 Economic trends that will stay after the Coronavirus crisis

Doha: Many believe that the Coronavirus crisis will not end with its elimination, but rather its repercussions will continue on the global economy in the future, and there is no doubt that even after the launch of the vaccine and the beginning of things returning to some aspects of normal life, there will be long-term effects on society and the economy.

According to the Kuwaiti newspaper, Al-Qabas, the Coronavirus has made rapid progress in several directions, from e-commerce to workplace culture, as the “Visual Capitalist” report sheds light on five of these accelerating trends:

1 – Time wasted on phones

Smartphones have drastically changed many parts of our lives, including how we spend time. In the decade from 2008 to 2018, the time we spend on mobile devices increased 12 times. The time people spend on mobile devices has increased, and games are the most prominent digital segment that has benefited from the epidemic, as video game revenues rose in the spring, and sales remained strong until 2020.

The companies also hope that the regular players who won during the lockdown will continue playing once the pandemic is over.

2- Changing consumer behaviour

It seems that innovations in real-world shopping are moving in the direction of payments away from cashiers, but for this model to work, people first need to adopt contactless payment methods.

Until now, the epidemic has been rapidly wicking people away from cash and withdrawn credit cards in lagging markets, and once people get used to contactless payments, they will likely continue to use these methods. Amazon has seen steady growth in subscription revenue in recent years, and the company’s actions have had a widespread impact on the rest of the industry. E-commerce companies also hope that people who have indulged in online ordering during the months of the pandemic will become lifelong customers.

3 – The height of globalization

It is clear that trade has been affected by the epidemic, and it is too early to determine the long-term effects. The only thing is clear is that the information component of globalization has become a more important part of the economic puzzle in the world.

Even before the spread of the coronavirus, global services trade was growing 60% faster than merchandise trade, reaching $ 13.4 trillion in value in 2019.

4- The wealth gap:

The top 50% of the wealthy group witnessed increasing gains, while the bottom 50 % witnessed a recession, while the younger generations face the double challenges of increasing the likelihood that they will be negatively affected by the epidemic, while they are also the least likely to achieve savings to cover the income disruption, Nearly half of the people in the 18-24-year-old have spared nothing at all.

The longer the economy is affected by Coronavirus measures, the greater the gap between people who have continued to work and those who work in the affected industries (such as tourism and events).

5- Flexible workplace

The pandemic has forced many companies to rethink remote work policies, as this experience is expected to affect office life as we know it, and is likely to completely reshape the office economy.

الدوحة: يرى كثيرون أن أزمة فيروس “كورونا” لن تنتهي بالقضاء عليه وإنما ستستمر تداعياته على الاقتصاد العالمي في المستقبل، و لا شك أنه حتى بعد إطلاق اللقاح وبداية الأمور في العودة إلى بعض مظاهر الحياة الطبيعية، ستكون هناك آثار طويلة الأمد على المجتمع والاقتصاد.

وبحسب صحيفة “القبس” الكويتية فإن فيروس كورونا حقق تقدماً سريعاً في عدد من الاتجاهات، من التجارة الإلكترونية إلى ثقافة مكان العمل، حيث سلط تقرير «فيجوال كابيتاليست» الضوء على خمسة من هذه الاتجاهات المتسارعة وهي:

 1 – الوقت المهدر على الهواتف

  لقد غيرت الهواتف الذكية بشكل كبير أجزاء كثيرة من حياتنا، بما في ذلك كيف نقضي الوقت. في العقد من عام 2008 إلى عام 2018، زاد الوقت الذي نقضيه على الأجهزة المحمولة بمقدار 12 ضعفاً. 

زاد الوقت الذي يقضيه الأشخاص على الأجهزة المحمولة ،وتعتبر الألعاب أبرز شريحة رقمية استفادت من الوباء، إذ ارتفعت إيرادات ألعاب الفيديو في فصل الربيع، وظلت المبيعات قوية حتى عام 2020.

 كما تأمل الشركات أن يستمر اللاعبون العاديون الذين فازوا خلال فترة الإغلاق في اللعب بمجرد انتهاء الوباء. 

2 – تغير سلوك المستهلك

يبدو أن الابتكارات في التسوق في العالم الحقيقي تتحرك في اتجاه عمليات الدفع بعيداً عن الكاشير، ولكن لكي يعمل هذا النموذج، يحتاج الناس أولاً إلى تبني طرق الدفع من دون تلامس.

 حتى الآن، كان الوباء متسارعاً في إبعاد الناس عن النقد وبطاقات الائتمان المسحوبة في الأسواق المتأخرة، وبمجرد أن يعتاد الأشخاص على عمليات الدفع من دون تلامس، فمن المحتمل أنهم سيستمرون في استخدام هذه الطرق. 

وشهدت شركة” أمازون” نمواً ثابتاً في إيرادات الاشتراكات في السنوات الأخيرة، وكان لإجراءات الشركة تأثير واسع النطاق على بقية الصناعة، كما تأمل شركات التجارة الإلكترونية أن الأشخاص الذين انغمسوا في الطلب عبر الإنترنت خلال أشهر الوباء، سوف يتحولون إلى عملاء مدى الحياة.

 3 – ذروة العولمة

من الواضح أن التجارة تأثرت بالوباء، ومن السابق لأوانه تحديد الآثار الطويلة المدى، والشيء الوحيد الواضح هو أن عنصر المعلومات في العولمة أصبح جزءاً أكثر أهمية من اللغز الاقتصادي في العالم. 

وحتى قبل انتشار فيروس «كوفيد – 19»، كانت تجارة الخدمات العالمية تنمو بمعدل أسرع بنسبة 60 في المئة من تجارة السلع، وبلغت قيمتها حوالي 13.4 تريليون دولار في عام 2019. 

4 – هوة الثروة 

شهدت  فئة الخمسين في المئة الأعلى ثراءً مكاسب متزايدة، بينما شهد 50 في المئة الأدنى، ركوداً، في حين تواجه الأجيال الشابة تحديات مزدوجة تتمثل في زيادة احتمالية تأثرها سلباً بالوباء، في حين أنها أيضاً الأقل احتمالية لتحقيق مدخرات لتغطية انقطاع الدخل، حيث أنه ما يقرب من نصف الأشخاص في الفئة العمرية 18 – 24 عاماً لم يدخروا شيئاً على الإطلاق. 

وكلما طالت مدة تأثر الاقتصاد بتدابير”كورونا”، ازدادت الفجوة بين الأشخاص الذين استمروا في العمل وأولئك الذين يعملون في الصناعات المتأثرة (مثل السياحة والأحداث)

5 – مكان العمل المرن

 أجبر الوباء العديد من الشركات على إعادة التفكير في سياسات العمل عن بعد، حيث من المتوقع أن تؤثر هذه التجربة على الحياة المكتبية كما نعرفها، ومن المحتمل أن تعيد تشكيل اقتصاد المكتب بالكامل.
