EU Provides Approximately 9 Million to Support Palestinian Hospitals in Jerusalem

Ramallah: The European Union provided Monday an additional contribution of 9.27 million to support the Palestinian Authority with medical referrals to East Jerusalem hospitals, said an EU press release.

This contribution is particularly timely amid the huge challenges facing the Palestinian health sector due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it said.

The East Jerusalem hospitals are fundamental in the Palestinian health system, as thousands of Palestinians benefit from their specialized services that are not available elsewhere in the West Bank or Gaza. The contribution by the EU will enable these hospitals to maintain their crucial services while responding to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Together with European Union Member States, the EU has been supporting the Palestinian Authority with regular contributions to cover the costs of referrals to East Jerusalem hospitals since 2012. Since then, the total support amounts to 140 million.

“We are witnessing an alarming increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Palestine. The health care system is overloaded and faces unprecedented challenges. Under these difficult circumstances, it is crucial that East Jerusalem hospitals can continue to provide quality specialized health care to Palestinians from all parts of the Palestinian territory. Through our Team Europe approach, we have managed to mobilize resources from the EU and its Members States to help the Palestinian Authority in facing the impact of Covid-19 pandemic. Our support to the Palestinian hospitals in East Jerusalem demonstrates once again our strong commitment towards the Palestinian people as well as the Palestinian institutions in the city,” said the EU Representative Sven Khn von Burgsdorff.

رام الله:  قدم الاتحاد الأوروبي اليوم مساهمة إضافية بقيمة 9.27 مليون يورو لمساعدة السلطة الفلسطينية في تغطية تكاليف التحويلات الطبية إلى مستشفيات القدس الشرقية.

وذكر الاتحاد في بيان له أن هذه المساهمة حاسمة بشكل خاص في خضم التحديات الهائلة التي تواجه قطاع الصحة الفلسطيني بسبب جائحة كورونا ” كوفيد-19″.

وبين الاتحاد أن مستشفيات القدس الشرقية تعد عنصرا أساسيا في النظام الصحي الفلسطيني، حيث تقدم خدمات صحية عالية الجودة لآلاف الفلسطينيين من الضفة الغربية، بما في ذلك القدس الشرقية وغزة.

وقال السيد سفن كون فون بورغسدورف ممثل الاتحاد الأوروبي في القدس المحتلة: “نشهد زيادة مقلقة في عدد حالات الإصابة بفيروس كورونا، ونظام الرعاية الصحية مثقل ويواجه تحديات غير مسبوقة وفي ظل هذه الظروف، من الضروري أن تستمر مستشفيات القدس الشرقية بتقديم خدمات صحية متخصصة عالية الجودة للفلسطينيين من كل الأراضي الفلسطينية”.

وتابع “من خلال نهج فريق أوروبا، تمكنا من تجنيد الموارد من الاتحاد الأوروبي والدول الأعضاء فيه لمساعدة السلطة الفلسطينية في مواجهة تأثير جائحة كورونا”.. موضحا “يثبت دعمنا للمستشفيات الفلسطينية في القدس الشرقية مرة أخرى التزامنا القوي تجاه الشعب الفلسطيني والمؤسسات الفلسطينية في المدينة”.

تجدر الإشارة إلى أن السيد رياض المالكي وزير الخارجية الفلسطيني، قد عقد اجتماعا في التاسع عشر من الشهر الجاري عبر تقنية ” الاتصال المرئي” مع وزراء خارجية الاتحاد الأوروبي .. حيث أكد الجانب الأوروبي دعمهم لجهود القيادة الفلسطينية في إنهاء الانقسام وعقد الانتخابات بأسرع ما يمكن، ومواقفهم التقليدية الثابتة من دعم حل الدولتين، ورفض الخطوات أحادية الجانب خاصة الاستيطان والضم وهدم المنازل، وتشريد المواطنين الفلسطينيين ومصادرة الأراضي.

كما أكد الجانب الأوروبي دعمه لوكالة غوث وتشغيل اللاجئين الفلسطينيين /أونروا/، وأهمية الدور الذي تقوم به.
