WHO: 70 Percent of COVID-19 Cases Located in 10 Countries

Geneva: While COVID-19 has affected all countries, the pandemic is “uneven”, and it is estimated that 10 per cent of the global population may have been infected with the virus, senior officials with the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

Speaking to a special session of the agency’s Executive Board, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said 10 countries account for 70 per cent of all reported cases and deaths, and just three countries account for half.

“Not all countries have responded the same way, and not all countries have been affected the same way”, he said.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, WHO has worked around the clock to support countries to prepare and respond to this new virus,” he pointed out.

“We have distributed millions of tests to more than 150 countries. No laboratory test in history has been developed and deployed as rapidly, ” he said.

Ten months ago, this virus was completely unknown to the world. We have now published more than 400 guidance documents for individuals, communities, schools, businesses, industries, health workers, health facilities and governments,” he said, adding “Our country teams have worked closely with governments to write national plans and identify needs, and to match those needs with more than 600 partners and 74 donors through the groundbreaking COVID-19 Partners Platform.”

More than 12,000 patients have now been enrolled in the WHO Solidarity Therapeutics Trial, in nearly 500 hospitals in 29 countries, the WHO chief said.

He also indicated that “WHO doesn’t have the mandate or the capacity to do everything. But we do have the unique mandate and capacity to coordinate the global response, by harnessing the collective strength of our many partners across the UN system and beyond.”

For his part, Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergency Program Dr. Michael Ryan said “The disease continues to spread. It is on the rise in many parts of the world.”

“The vast majority of the world remains at risk,” he added.

WHO Executive Board is composed of 34 members, and its main functions are to give effect to the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, advise it and generally to facilitate its work.

وأضاف أن منظمة الصحة العالمية عملت جاهدة لتوفير الاختبارات التشخيصية ومعدات الوقاية وتوزيعها على أكثر من 150 دولة حول العالم في سابقة تاريخية.

وأوضح أن منظمة الصحة العالمية وزعت منذ ظهور الفيروس أكثر من 400 وثيقة استرشادية لكيفية التعامل معه وعملت بالتعاون مع أكثر من 600 شريك و74 مانحا لتوفير احتياجات مختلف الدول، كما تمكنت المنظمة، حتى الآن، من تسجيل أكثر من 12 ألف مريض فيما يقرب من 500 مستشفى في 29 دولة في إطار تجربة (التضامن العلاجي).

وركز تيدروس على أن منظمة الصحة العالمية لا تملك التفويض أو القدرة على فعل كل شيء ولكن لديها “التفويض والقدرة الفريدة” لتنسيق الاستجابة العالمية من خلال تسخير القوة الجماعية للعديد من الشركاء عبر منظومة الأمم المتحدة وخارجها.

من جانبه، قال رئيس برنامج الطوارئ في المنظمة مايكل رايان، في الاجتماع، إن “الغالبية العظمى من سكان العالم لا تزال في خطر الإصابة بالفيروس”.

ويتألف المجلس التنفيذي لمنظمة الصحة العالمية من 34 عضوا، وتتمثل وظائفه الرئيسية في تنفيذ قرارات وسياسات الجمعية العمومية للمنظمة وتقديم المشورة.
