Kushner is visiting Saudi Arabia and Qatar in a last attempt to solve the Gulf crisis

Doha: A source in the White House confirmed to Al Jazeera that Jared Kushner, an advisor to the outgoing US President Donald Trump, will travel with a team of his aides in the coming days to Saudi Arabia, and will go then to the State of Qatar.
For its part, Reuters reported late on Sunday evening that a senior US administration official said that Kushner will meet within the next few days the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Saudi city of Neom, and with the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in Doha.
According to the same source, the US President’s advisor and son-in-law will be accompanied by US Middle East envoy Avi Berkowitz, Brian Hook, and Adam Buehler, head of the US Foundation for International Development Finance.
In the context, the American news site Axios reported that Kushner’s visit comes as a last attempt to resolve the Gulf crisis that erupted more than 3 years ago, when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt announced the severance of their relations with Qatar and the imposition of a blockade on it.
In turn, the Wall Street Journal quoted US and Gulf officials as saying that the main focus of the talks will be on resolving the dispute over the flight of Qatar Airways planes in the skies of Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The newspaper also mentioned that the four blockading countries have secretly eased their 13 demands, noting that Saudi Arabia has shown greater willingness to find common ground to solve the crisis.
About two weeks ago, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani confirmed that his country welcomes the dialogue based on respect for sovereignty, considering that there is no winner from the Gulf crisis, while US National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien said in simultaneous statements that the President’s administration Trump wants to resolve the crisis before it potentially leaves the White House.
In June 2017, the four countries announced severing their relations with Qatar and imposing a blockade on it, and set 13 demands to back down from the blockade and sever ties, but Doha confirmed its rejection of everything that affects its sovereignty and independence of its national decision, affirming at the same time its readiness for dialogue on the basis of parity and respect for sovereignty.

من جهتها، نقلت وكالة رويترز في وقت متأخر من مساء الأحد عن مسؤول كبير بالإدارة الأميركية أن كوشنر سيلتقي خلال الأيام القليلة المقبلة بولي العهد السعودي محمد بن سلمان في مدينة نيوم السعودية، ومع أمير قطر الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني في الدوحة.
ووفق المصدر نفسه، سيرافق مستشار الرئيس الأميركي وصهره مبعوثا الولايات المتحدة للشرق الأوسط آفي بيركوفيتش، وبراين هوك، ورئيس مؤسسة تمويل التنمية الدولية الأميركية آدم بوهلر.
في السياق، أورد موقع أكسيوس (Axios) الإخباري الأميركي أن زيارة كوشنر تأتي كمحاولة أخيرة لحل الأزمة الخليجية التي اندلعت قبل أكثر من 3 سنوات، حين أعلنت السعودية والإمارات والبحرين ومصر قطع علاقاتها مع قطر وفرض حصار عليها.
بدورها، نقلت صحيفة وول ستريت جورنال (Wall Street Journal) عن مسؤولين أميركيين وخليجيين قولهم إن التركيز الرئيسي للمحادثات سيكون على حل الخلاف بشأن تحليق طائرات الخطوط الجوية القطرية في أجواء السعودية والإمارات.
كما ذكرت الصحيفة أن دول الحصار الأربع خففت سرا مطالبها الـ13، مشيرة إلى أن السعودية أبدت استعدادا أكبر لإيجاد أرضية مشتركة لحل الأزمة.
وقبل نحو أسبوعين من الآن، أكد وزير الخارجية القطري الشيخ محمد بن عبد الرحمن آل ثاني أن بلاده ترحّب بالحوار القائم على احترام السيادة، معتبرا أنه ليس هناك رابح من الأزمة الخليجية، في حين قال مستشار الأمن القومي الأميركي روبرت أوبراين في تصريحات متزامنة إن إدارة الرئيس ترامب ترغب في حل الأزمة قبل مغادرتها المحتملة البيت الأبيض.
وكانت الدول الأربع أعلنت في يونيو/حزيران 2017 قطع علاقاتها مع قطر وفرض حصار عليها، ووضعت 13 شرطا للتراجع عن الحصار وقطع العلاقات، لكن الدوحة أكدت رفضها كل ما يمس سيادتها واستقلال قرارها الوطني، مؤكدة في الوقت نفسه استعدادها للحوار على قاعدة الندية واحترام السيادة.
