Doha: The announcement by Pfizer that the vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in a large-scale clinical trial has lifted the mood of Qatar’s travel and hospitality sector. The officials say that it will be a game-changing vaccine in fight against coronavirus and the announcement has boosted the morale of travel and hospitality sectors, which were battered by COVID-19 pandemic
“The news about new vaccine has raised hopes that the life may return to normal soon and people will be able to travel soon easily and without worrying about quarantine rules. Currently, quarantine rules are the biggest deterrent for travel industry. People are not willing to travel because they know they would have to spend a week or more in quarantine,” General Manager of Milano Travel, Ali Thabet told The Peninsula. “After the news about vaccine, people will start making plans about their travel plans. We hope that this vaccine becomes available in Qatar soon. This news is big boost to travel and aviation sector,” he added.
The newfound enthusiasm in local businesses is in sync with global euphoria witnessed in the past two days. The announcement that was made on Monday about COVID-19 vaccine triggered huge rallies in the stock markets around the world. Shares of companies in travel, hotel, entertainment, aviation sector have rallied in the past two days.
The impact of Pfizer’s vaccine announced was also visible in Qatar also. The QE index has jumped 223 points in the past two days. The index had surged 186 points on Monday while it jumped 37 points yesterday to closed at 10,131.85 points.
“The news about COVID-19 vaccine was long awaited. It has boosted the sentiments in hospitality sector. We are hoping that the vaccine will remove the fears of infection from travellers mind. Once vaccine is available in Qatar and other countries, we will see increase in number of tourists coming to Qatar. This will brighten the business prospects for hotels and restaurants. Hospitality sector will benefit immensely from the vaccine availability,” marketing manager of a four-star hotel told The Peninsula.
