Stockholm: The first vaccinations in the European Union against COVID-19 could happen in the first three months of 2021, the bloc’s health agency says, as Russian developers report initial test results showing their Sputnik V vaccine to be 92 percent effective.
“I think optimistically first quarter next year, but I can’t be more precise,” Andrea Ammon, the director of the Stockholm-based European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), said in an interview.
A European source told AFP on Tuesday that a vaccine could be authorised for use in the EU in “early 2021”, after the announcement that US pharmaceutical group Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech’s vaccine had shown 90 percent effectiveness in phase three trials.
“Of course it’s promising,” said Ammon, stressing that so far it is a “press release and not yet a (scientific) peer review, so we have to see what the final assessment will be.”
For any vaccine to be available within the European Union, it has to receive authorisation from the European Medicines Agency.
The European Commission said Wednesday it had signed a contract with Pfizer and BioNTech to buy 300 million doses of their vaccine.
Ammon said the pandemic’s spread in Europe was “very, very concerning” and all indicators were “going in the wrong direction right now.”
Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine is 92 percent effective according to initial test results, its developers said on Wednesday, as Moscow races against its competitors in the West.
The calculations were based on results from 16,000 individuals who received both doses of the vaccine, Russia’s health ministry, the state-run Gamaleya research centre and the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said in a statement.
“The Sputnik V vaccine had an efficacy rate of 92 percent after the second dose,” the statement said, after 20 of the volunteers — some of whom were given the placebo — tested positive for coronavirus.
The adenovirus vector-based vaccine uses modified viruses of the regular flu. Some of those vaccinated experienced “pain at the injection site, flu-like syndrome including fever, weakness, fatigue and headache,” the statement said.
Russia in August became the first country to register a coronavirus vaccine but did so ahead of the large-scale clinical trials that are still under way.
Forty thousand volunteers at 29 medical centres are taking part in the third and final phase of Sputnik V trials.

وأضافت أندريا “بالطبع إنه أمر واعد”، مشددًا على أنه حتى الآن “بيان صحفي وليس مراجعة علمية حتى الآن، لذلك علينا أن نرى ما سيكون التقييم النهائي”.
ولكي يتوفر أي لقاح داخل الاتحاد الأوروبي، يجب أن يحصل على تصريح من وكالة الأدوية الأوروبية.
قالت المفوضية الأوروبية يوم الأربعاء إنها وقعت عقدًا مع شركتي فايزر وبيونتك لشراء 300 مليون جرعة من اللقاح.

وقالت وزارة الصحة الروسية ومركز أبحاث الجمالية الذي تديره الدولة وصندوق الاستثمار المباشر الروسي في بيان إن الحسابات استندت إلى نتائج 16 ألف فرد تلقوا جرعتين من اللقاح. وجاء في البيان أن “لقاح “سبوتنيك في” بلغ معدل فعاليته 92 في المائة بعد الجرعة الثانية”، بعد أن ثبتت إصابة 20 متطوعًا – بعضهم تم اعطائهم الدواء الوهمي – بفيروس كورونا.
يستخدم اللقاح المستند إلى ناقلات الفيروسات الغدية فيروسات معدلة من الأنفلونزا العادية. وقال البيان ان بعض الذين تم تطعيمهم عانوا من “آلام في موقع الحقن ومتلازمة تشبه الانفلونزا بما في ذلك الحمى والضعف والتعب والصداع”.
في أغسطس أصبحت روسيا أول دولة تسجل لقاحًا لفيروس كورونا لكنها فعلت ذلك قبل التجارب السريرية واسعة النطاق التي لا تزال جارية.
يشارك أربعون ألف متطوع في 29 مركزًا طبيًا في المرحلة الثالثة والأخيرة من تجارب لقاح “سبوتنيك في”.
