One in five people with coronavirus develops a mental illness

London: Psychiatrists said, that many Coronavirus survivors are more likely to suffer from mental illnesses, after an extensive study concluded that 20% of those recovering from the virus were diagnosed with a mental disorder within 90 days of their recovery from covid-19. Anxiety, depression and insomnia were more common among recovering Covid-19 patients who developed psychological problems in the study, and researchers also found significantly higher risks of developing dementia.

Paul Harrison, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Oxford in Britain, said: “People were concerned that survivors of Covid-19 would become more vulnerable to mental health problems … and our results show that this is probable.” Harrison said that doctors and scientists around the world desperately need to investigate the causes and identify new treatments for mental illnesses after Covid-19. He added, “Health services must be ready to provide care, especially since our results are likely to reduce the number of mentally ill patients”.

لندن: قال أطباء نفسيون، إن الكثير من الناجين من فيروس كورونا باتوا أكثر عرضةً للإصابة بأمراض نفسية، بعدما خلصت دراسة موسعة إلى أنّ 20% من المتعافين من الفيروس جرى تشخيص إصابتهم باضطراب نفسيّ في غضون 90 يومًا من شفائهم من كورونا. وكان القلق والاكتئاب والأرق أكثر شيوعًا بين مرضى «كوفيد-19» المتعافين الذين أصيبوا بمشاكل نفسية في الدراسة، ووجد الباحثون أيضًا مخاطرَ أعلى بشكل ملحوظ للإصابة بالخرف.

وقال بول هاريسون، أستاذ الطب النفسي بجامعة أوكسفورد في بريطانيا: «كان الناس يشعرون بالقلق من أن يصبح الناجون من «كوفيد-19» أكثر عرضة للإصابة بمشاكل الصحة النفسية.. ونتائجنا تظهر أن هذا أمر مرجح». وقال هاريسون إنّ الأطباء والعلماء في جميع أنحاء العالم بحاجة ماسّة إلى تحرّي الأسباب وتحديد علاجات جديدة للأمراض النفسيّة بعد «كوفيد-19». وأضاف: «يجب أن تكون الأجهزةُ الصحيةُ جاهزةً لتقديم الرعاية، لاسيّما أن نتائجنا تقلّل على الأرجح من عدد المرضى النفسيّين» عن الواقع.
