اليونيسيف والصحة العالمية توجهان نداء دوليا لتفادي انتشار الحصبة وشلل الأطفال

New York: United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) today issued an urgent call to action to avert major measles and polio epidemics as COVID-19 continues to disrupt immunization services worldwide, leaving millions of vulnerable children at heightened risk of preventable childhood diseases.
The two organizations estimate that $655 million ($400 million for polio and $255 million for measles) are needed to address dangerous immunity gaps in countries which are ineligible to join the Vaccine Alliance (GAVI).
“COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on health services and in particular immunization services, worldwide,” commented WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“But unlike with COVID, we have the tools and knowledge to stop diseases such as polio and measles. What we need are the resources and commitments to put these tools and knowledge into action. If we do that, children’s lives will be saved,” he said.
“We cannot allow the fight against one deadly disease to cause us to lose ground in the fight against other diseases,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director.
“Addressing the global COVID-19 pandemic is critical. However, other deadly diseases also threaten the lives of millions of children in some of the poorest areas of the world. That is why today we are urgently calling for global action from country leaders, donors and partners. We need additional financial resources to safely resume vaccination campaigns and prioritize immunization systems that are critical to protect children and avert other epidemics besides COVID-19,” she added.
The two organizations also stated that they had recorded the return and continued spread of measles around the world in recent years, and indicated that the vaccination coverage gaps in 2020 have worsened due to the COVID-19.
In 2019, the number of new measles cases jumped to the highest number in more than two decades.

نيويورك: وجهت منظمتا الأمم المتحدة للطفولة /اليونيسف/ و/الصحة العالمية/ نداء عاجلا لدول العالم بالتحرك والعمل على تفادي انتشار مرضي الحصبة وشلل الأطفال، في الوقت الذي تواصل فيه جائحة /كوفيد-19/ تعطيل خدمات التحصين في جميع المناطق بلا استثناء، مما يضاعف من مخاطر تعرض ملايين الأطفال لأمراض يمكن تفاديها.
وقدرت المنظمتان، في بيان مشترك اليوم، أن هناك حاجة إلى 655 مليون دولار (400 مليون دولار بالنسبة لشلل الأطفال و255 مليون دولار بالنسبة للحصبة) لمعالجة الفجوات الخطيرة في المناعة في البلدان غير المؤهلة للانضمام إلى تحالف اللقاحات المعروف باسم (Gavi).
وفي سياق متصل، قال السيد تيدروس غيبريسوس مدير عام منظمة الصحة العالمية، في تصريحات، إن فيروس كورونا ألقى بتأثير مدمر على الخدمات الصحية وخاصة خدمات التحصين في جميع أنحاء العالم، مضيفا أنه لدى المنظمة الأدوات والمعرفة لوقف الأمراض مثل شلل الأطفال والحصبة، عكس /كوفيد-19/ الذي لم يتم اكتشاف علاج له بعد.
وأوضح أن “ما تحتاجه المنظمة الدولية هو الموارد والالتزامات لوضع هذه الأدوات والمعرفة موضع التنفيذ.. وإذا فعلنا ذلك، سيتم إنقاذ حياة الأطفال”.
من جهتها، أكدت السيدة هنريتا فور المديرة التنفيذية لـ /اليونيسف/، في تصريحات، ضرورة ألا تثني “الحرب ضد كورونا العالم بأسره عن مكافحة الأمراض الأخرى”، لافتة إلى أن “التصدي لأزمة /كوفيد-19/ العالمية أمر بالغ الأهمية، ولكن مع ذلك هناك أمراض مميتة أخرى تهدد أيضا حياة ملايين الأطفال في بعض أفقر مناطق العالم”.
وأضافت أن هذا هو السبب في الدعوة العاجلة الموجهة اليوم بهدف اتخاذ إجراءات عالمية من جانب قادة البلدان والمانحين والشركاء، مشددة على الحاجة إلى موارد مالية إضافية لاستئناف حملات التطعيم بصورة آمنة وإعطاء الأولوية لأنظمة التحصين التي تعتبر بالغة الأهمية لحماية الأطفال وتجنب الأوبئة الأخرى إلى جانب /كوفيد-19/.
كما ذكرت المنظمتان الأمميتان أنهما سجلتا عودة مرض الحصبة على المستوى العالمي في السنوات الأخيرة، مع استمرار تفشيه في جميع أنحاء العالم، وأشارتا إلى تفاقم فجوات تغطية التطعيم عام 2020 بسبب فيروس كورونا.
جدير بالذكر أنه في عام 2019، قفز عدد حالات الإصابة الجديدة بالحصبة إلى أعلى عدد منذ أكثر من عقدين.
