Aspetar Introduces New Advanced Therapy to Repair Cartilage Defects in Knee

Doha: Aspetar surgeons at the orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital used a new advanced therapy, the first of its kind, to repair cartilage defects, as the first medical institution to use this technology in the region.

The newly introduced technic used by Aspetar surgeons is the first one-stage cartilage repair with freshly isolated Chondrocytes, to be performed out of Europe.

The cartilage cells were harvested and isolated from the patient, and then prepared in a portable lab, enhanced by Stem cells, and applied to a biological membrane. This membrane was then implanted to the cartilage defect in the patients knee.

During the procedure the surgeon combines chondrocytes and stem cells of the patient and this mixture is applied to the cartilage defect with the use of a biological absorbable membrane. In this way, the chondrocytes are producing cartilage and the defect is filled with new tissue under a certain biological timeline.

“At present, we do not have the optimal treatment option for cartilage, however, this technique gives better mid to long-term results when compared with other most commonly used techniques like microfractures,” Dr. Emmanouil Papakostas, Aspetar Orthopaedic surgeon, said.

The procedure can be done arthroscopically or with mini arthrotomy and the duration is less than two hours. The patient stays in the hospital for one or two days and to resume his daily activities, it takes 6 to 8 weeks considering the exact anatomical location of the problem and the size.

The same parameters also play a role in the return to playtime, which can be from 6 to 12 months.

This new service will allow the hospital to perform the procedure for selected cases, with the proper indication, as part of the full spectrum of joint preservation treatments that are already applied at Aspetar.

Damage to the articular cartilage of the knee in athletes presents one of the most difficult challenges in the care of elite and recreational athletes.

Cartilage defect injuries in athletes are common in sports associated with jumping, pivoting, rapid deceleration, and acceleration. This is particularly true of football, basketball, and handball, but may also occur in any sport requiring these repeated athletic movements.

الدوحة: تمكن جراحو مستشفى “سبيتار” لجراحة العظام والطب الرياضي في قطر، من استخدام تقنية علاجية جديدة هي الأولى من نوعها لعلاج وترميم غضروف الركبة، كأول مؤسسة طبية تستخدم هذه التقنية في المنطقة.

وتعد التقنية، والتي يستخدمها جراحو “سبيتار”، أول عملية إصلاح لغضروف الركبة من مرحلة واحدة لزراعة الخلايا الغضروفية المعزولة يتم إجراؤها في مستشفى خارج أوروبا.

وقام جراحو “سبيتار” بزراعة الخلايا الغضروفية التي تم عزلها من المريض ووضعها في مختبر محمول، معززة بالخلايا الجذعية وتطبيقها على غشاء بيولوجي، ليتم حقن هذا الغشاء المزروع على عيب الغضروف في ركبة المريض بهدف ترميم العيوب وإصلاحها .

ويلجأ الجراح خلال العملية إلى المزج بين الخلايا الغضروفية والخلايا الجذعية للمريض ويتم تطبيق هذا الخليط على خلل الغضروف المصاب باستخدام غشاء بيولوجي قابل للامتصاص، ومن ثم تنتج الخلايا الغضروفية غضروفا مستحدثا ليمتلئ مكان العيب بأنسجة جديدة خلال جدول زمني بيولوجي معين.

وقال الدكتور إيمانويل باباكوستاس، جراح العظام في “سبيتار” والذي أشرف على هذا النوع من العمليات: “في الوقت الحالي، لا يوجد خيار علاجي مثالي للغضروف، ومع ذلك، فإن هذه التقنية تعطي نتائج أفضل على المدى المتوسط إلى الطويل إذا ما تم مقارنتها مع التقنيات الأخرى المستخدمة كثيرا مثل جراحات الكسور الدقيقة”.

ويمكن إجراء هذه العملية بالمنظار أو بتدخل جراحي بسيط في زمن لا يتعدى الساعتين.. حيث يمكث المريض في المستشفى ليوم أو يومين، قبل أن يعود لاستئناف أنشطته اليومية، ويستغرق التعافي من 6 إلى 8 أسابيع مع الأخذ في الاعتبار الموقع التشريحي الدقيق لمكان المشكلة وحجمها.

كما تلعب نفس الأسباب أيضا دورا في وقت العودة إلى اللعب وممارسة الرياضة، والذي يمكن أن يتراوح ما بين 6 إلى 12 شهرا.

وستسمح الخدمات الحديثة المطبقة من طرف جراحي “سبيتار” بإجراء العملية لحالات محددة، كجزء من مجموعة متكاملة من العلاجات التي يوفرها المستشفى لعلاج إصابات مفاصل الركبة.
