Washington: The United States agreed to extradite to Japan two Americans suspected of helping the former auto mogul, Carlos Ghosn, flee the Japanese judiciary in strange circumstances at the end of 2019. But a federal judge in Massachusetts stopped the extradition process on Thursday, after the two men had appealed the decision, pending a hearing in their case.
Michael Taylor and his son, Peter Taylor, were arrested in May 20, Massachusetts, at the request of Tokyo, and Taylor was formerly working in the US Special Forces before moving to work in a private security company.
According to a court document, US Assistant Secretary of State Stephen Begon agreed to Japan’s request to extradite the two men. “I confirm that the decision to extradite Taylor and his son to Japan is consistent with international obligations and national laws and regulations,” said a court document.
The father and son confirm that they have received an email informing them that they will be transferred by plane from Boston to Tokyo at 13:00 Thursday. The two men say that they will not get a fair trial in Japan, and their lawyers described the Foreign Ministry’s decision as “arbitrary” and violates US law and the extradition agreement signed with Japan, noting that Tokyo did not provide sufficient evidence.
Tokyo accused the two men, as well as the Lebanese, George Antoine Zayek, of helping the former president of the Renault – Nissan – Mitsubishi Alliance to escape from the Japanese judiciary in December 2019.
The Japanese judiciary had released Ghosn, who was accused of financial violations, and held the French, Lebanese and Brazilian nationalities, while preventing him from leaving Japan. But he managed to sneak out of the country in a box of a musical instrument.
Since then, Carlos Ghosn has sought refuge in Lebanon, which has no extradition agreement with Japan.
In response to a question about the extradition decision, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry refused to comment on “a case that is still ongoing.”

واشنطن: وافقت الولايات المتحدة على تسليم اليابان أمريكيين يشتبه بأنهما ساعدا قطب السيارات السابق، كارلوس غصن، على الفرار من القضاء الياباني في ظروف غريبة نهاية 2019.
لكن قاضيًا فيدراليًا في ولاية ماساشوستس أوقف عملية التسليم أمس الأول الخميس، بعدما استأنف الرجلان القرار، في انتظار النظر في قضيتهما.
واعتقل مايكل تايلور وابنه بيتر تايلور في 20 مايوفي ماساشوستس بطلب من طوكيو، وكان تايلور يعمل سابقًا في القوات الخاصة الأمريكية قبل أن ينتقل للعمل في شركة أمن خاصة.
وتفيد وثيقة قضائية بأن مساعد وزير الخارجية الأمريكية، ستيفن بيغون، وافق على طلب اليابان تسليم الرجلين، وقالت المحامية في وزارة الخارجية كارين جونسون «أؤكد أن قرار تسليم تايلور وابنه إلى اليابان يتفق مع الالتزامات الدولية والقوانين والقواعد التنظيمية الوطنية».
ويؤكد الأب وابنه أنهما تلقيا، رسالة إلكترونية تبلغهما بأنهما سينقلان في طائرة من بوسطن إلى طوكيو عند الساعة 13:00 الخميس. ويقول الرجلان إنهما لن يحصلا على محاكمة عادلة في اليابان، ووصف محاموهما قرار وزارة الخارجية بأنه «تعسفي»، وينتهك القانون الأمريكي واتفاق تسليم المطلوبين الموقع مع اليابان، مشيرين إلى أن طوكيو لم تقدم أدلة كافية.
واتهمت طوكيو الرجلين وكذلك اللبناني جورج أنطوان زايك بمساعدة الرئيس السابق ل «تحالف رينو نيسان ميتسوبيشي» (Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance) على الهرب من القضاء الياباني في ديسمبر 2019.
وكان القضاء الياباني أفرج عن غصن المتهم بمخالفات مالية ويحمل الجنسيات الفرنسية واللبنانية والبرازيلية، مع منعه من مغادرة اليابان؛ لكنه تمكن من التسلل إلى خارج البلاد في صندوق لآلة موسيقية.
ومنذ ذلك الحين، لجأ كارلوس غصن إلى لبنان، الذي لا يربطه اتفاق لتسليم المطلوبين مع اليابان.
وردًا على سؤال عن قرار التسليم، رفض ناطق باسم وزارة الخارجية التعليق على «قضية ما زالت جارية».
