Researchers Create the First Ever HUMAN TONGUE

Doha: In a technological breakthrough that re-senses things in everyone who has lost their tongue, a multidisciplinary team has created a replica of a human tongue with artificial soft surfaces and tongue-like tissues.

 According to Russia Today, scientists led by the University of Leeds, in cooperation with the University of Edinburgh, have accurately simulated the surface of the human tongue, which plays an important role in how food is tasted, how it speaks and swallows, and absorbs nutrients, among other functions.

Lead author, Dr. Evrin Andablo Reyes, who described the work as a “unique architectural challenge”, explained: “Hundreds of small bud-like structures called papillae give the tongue a distinctive rough texture, which, along with the soft nature of the tissues, creates a landscape. These impressions were then visually scanned with a 3D technique to map the dimensions of the papillae on the surface, in addition to their density and average total roughness of the human tongue. And it turns out that the texture is a lot like a random layout.

The scientists claim that the biomimetic tongue precisely simulates the structure, flexibility and “wettability,” and the artificial silicon skeleton could play a game-changing role in examining new oral technologies, while improving nutritional techniques, drugs and treatments for dry mouth.

The team, made up of food scientists and experts in soft matter physics, dentistry, mechanical engineering as well as computer science, focused on the anterior dorsal segment (roughly the middle of the visible tongue, after the tip but before the base).

This area is partly covered by some papillae (small gaps spread across the tongue), which contain the taste receptors, although not all of them act as taste receptors. The team took molds for tongue roofs from 15 adult participants.

ثم جرى مسح هذه الانطباعات بصريا بتقنية ثلاثية الأبعاد لرسم خرائط لأبعاد الحليمات على السطح، بالإضافة إلى كثافتها ومتوسط الخشونة الكلية للألسنة البشرية. وتبين أن النسيج يشبه إلى حد كبير التخطيط العشوائي.

ويزعم العلماء أن لسان المحاكاة الحيوية يحاكي بدقة الهيكل والمرونة و”القابلية للبلل، كما يمكن أن يلعب هيكل السيليكون الاصطناعي دورا يغير قواعد اللعبة في فحص التقنيات الجديدة عن طريق الفم، مع تحسين التقنيات الغذائية والأدوية وعلاجات جفاف الفم.

وركز الفريق، المؤلف من علماء أغذية وخبراء في فيزياء المواد اللينة وطب الأسنان والهندسة الميكانيكية بالإضافة إلى علوم الكمبيوتر، على الجزء الظهري الأمامي (تقريبا منتصف اللسان المرئي، بعد الحافة ولكن قبل القاعدة ).
