Antarctic Sea Ice Hits Record Low Maximum Extent for 2023

Washington: The US National Snow and Ice Data Center Antarctic sea ice has likely reached its maximum extent for the year. The 2023 maximum is the lowest satellite record since 1979.

Scientists at the center explained the Antarctic sea ice has likely reached its maximum extent for the year at 16.96 million square kilometers (6.55 million square miles) on Sep. 10. It is more than one million square kilometers (386,000 square miles) below the previous record low maximum extent set in 1986.

Scientists warn that this shift could have serious consequences for animals such as penguins that breed and raise their young on sea ice, while also accelerating global warming by reducing the amount of sunlight that white ice reflects back into space.
The sea ice extent is defined as the total area of the ocean in which the ice cover fraction is at least 15 percent.

واشنطن: ذكر المركز الوطني الأمريكي لبيانات الثلوج والجليد، أن أقصى مدى للجليد في البحر القطبي الجنوبي خلال عام 2023، هو الأدنى منذ بدء تسجيل صور الأقمار الاصطناعية خلال عام 1979.

وأوضح علماء المركز أن جليد البحر القطبي الجنوبي قد وصل لأقصى مدى هذا العام في 10 سبتمبر الجاري بواقع 16.96 مليون كيلومتر مربع، وهو أقل من مليون كيلومتر مربع من الرقم القياسي السابق لأقصى مدى للجليد والذي تم تسجيله عام 1986.

ويحذر العلماء من أن هذا التحول يمكن أن تكون له عواقب وخيمة على الحيوانات مثل طيور البطريق التي تتكاثر وتربي صغارها على الجليد البحري، بينما تعمل أيضا على تسريع ظاهرة الاحتباس الحراري عن طريق تقليل كمية ضوء الشمس التي يعكسها الجليد الأبيض إلى الفضاء.

يشار إلى أن مدى الجليد يعني إجمالي المساحة التي يبلغ فيها تركيز الجليد ما لا يقل عن 15 بالمائة.
